Devlin plans, which format to buy?

For all of the guys here that have built any of the Devlin boats. . .did you purchase the downloadable plans or the paper construction plans?

Which would you recommend?

Do the paper plans come in full format that can be laid out onto the sheets of plywood?

Thanks

The plans are not lay on and cut out. You must loft the dimensions on wood and cut out. When I bought mine - paper was the only option, but PDF would have been fine, I would think.

tod- thanks for the quick reply. are you hunting out of the cackler or the snow goose? perhaps another and I am totally off base.

I think I have asked this before here, but is there someone in South NJ running a BlackBrant II. I would really like to see one in person.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will be making it to the Tuckerton show this weekend. I figured someone there would probably have one.

I have bought both. Either are fine. The plans are not full size so you have to loft the dimensions from the plans onto the boat. It is actually very easy to do. I suggest you also purchase Sam's book as it shows the lofting process. Good luck.

Chris, Yes, a friend of mine had a BB2 , when I called him a few months back to check on getting together he had sold it during the off-season.

From what I remember the bb2 is sort of a combo hull between displacement and planing. (Ran bow high under power ) The BB3 has a much more efficient planing hull shape for use with a motor.

If you would like to take a ride to Long Island we have a BBII and a BBIII in the fleet. Your welcome to check out both boats side by side.

John, thanks for the offer. That is very generous of you and would be much appreciated. How far out on the island are you?

I'm in Wantagh (11793). On the South shore of Nassau County. I'm not sure how far south in NJ you are but to give you an idea it took me 2 hours from my house to exit 4 on the NJTPKE this morning with little to no traffic.

I live in south jersey and have a snow goose I did not build it myself, but if you wanted to check it out you could. I leave for costa rica fri. getting married fri. also some one just had plywood patterns for sale thought that was here. PM me and I will get back to you when i get back. The snowgoose is the best boat i ever owned. i have had over 15 boats in my life

I'm the guy with the plywood patterns advertised. They are patterns for the frames and transoms only. You'd still have to loft the sides and bottoms. Having them would be a big help in building the boat, but having the paper plans and buying Sam's book would still be a big help in construction. Take a look at the pics I posted in the Classified section and PM me if you have any questions.

Very worth it to see one of the boats before building, even a model a size up or down would help a lot.

Nice offer John!

John L. and T, PMs sent. Again, thanks for the generous offer. I hope to meet up with each of you.

Mr Bourbon- I assume the plywood templates would be or could be cost prohibitive to ship to South NJ. Any thoughts on weight, assuming they are still around. Cost might get wrapped around the size of them rather than the weight of them.

I have downloaded 2 sets of Devlin's plans, and they are all you need plus you get them instantly. I also really recommend getting his book, and he now has a stitch-and-glue manual on his site that you can download for a few bucks that gives a really good illustrated overview of the process, with some more recent information than is in his book.

They may well be cost prohibitive to ship. I really don't know. My big concern with shipping them is not feeling confident of them arriving undamaged. Do you know anybody headed to Vt, say for school or on their way to Montreal...it would be fine with me if a 3rd party picked them up and dropped them off to you in NJ. Just a thought....

Are your plywood patterns for the Snow Goose or for one of the Black Brants?

I am considering building one of the Brants. I am looking to move to a Sneakbox for my son and I to hunt from. If we start now, we can build the BBIII and hunt the two of us from it. If we wait another year or two, I can sell my 16' mod-V john boat and get two Barnegat sneakboxes. Then we can each hunt from our own boat. If I was headed out alone, I wouldn't have to drag a bigger boat out to hunt from. I am very intrigued by hunting out of a Sneakbox. The decision as to which is very difficult!

The plywood templates are for the Snow Goose. Good luck on trying to figure out which boat to build. Predicting the future and future needs is not easy......
