Devlin Snowgoose Desin and Modfication

Tom, just as an FYI, World Panel Products has a warehouse in Windsor, NC. Call and speak with Al Jernigan, tell him Brad Taylor recommended them. I have purchasing ply from them for 8 or so years. Great people to deal with and have a number of different types of ply including meranti and okoume.

Hey Brad, thanks for the tip.. You would think that with as many marinas and boat repair shops that I would have plenty of marine plywood vendors in the area but not so... I basically only have one and you usually have to have them order it through their supplier and then you end up having to pay for the shipping plus their mark up.. I'll give World Panel a call... How many Gators did you build this year? I actually helped my best friend build his 16' and 18' Gators a few years back. Great boat...

No problem Tom. I built Two of the Duckhunters and two of the ATCs I designed.

Tom, the main thing you may want to consider is the snow goose free board is said to be less than the honker or cackler...I would go honker

I didn't appreciate the difference in sheer between the Cackler and Snow Goose until after I launched my lengthened Cackler, side by side the difference is startling. In big rough water, my Cackler is much more seaworthy. The greater sheer makes for a nicer looking boat in my opinion, but the lower bow on a Snow Goose might hide a little easier.

My buddies Snow Goose...

My 15'-4" Cackler...

Phil you are invited any time, the problem is timing it right. You need to show up and be here when that first artic cold front brings the birds down out of Canada. After that everything's a crapshoot, sometimes it's good for another month r two, but just as likely the cold front will freeze everything up and drive the birds further south.

I will definitely say: a swan on the bow kind of makes what you're saying right now one of those "Most interesting man in the world" deals...

I don't talk about "sheer" much, but when I do, I do it with my swan tag filled....

Awesome pic!

Too funny and thanks. I'll definitely tell my wife who she's married to...

BTW, the real stud was my dog Gus who retrieved that 23 lb bird without hesitation...

John,

Just read your posts.. I do like the look of your extended Cackler. Do you think it could be extended to 16'? I'm sure the beam would need to be extended along with the sheer. What's your thought? I'm still looking hard at the Devlin Honker but the 18' hull is still cramming my building space...

Sure, the limiting factor for me was how long a boat can you get out of two sheets of plywood scarfed. With the overlap it's less than 16', but perhaps a bit more than the 15'-4" of my boat. I just added one 1' section in the middle straight run of the 14'-4" Cackler. I would scarf the plywood and lay out the longest boat you can. Just add the length in the straight part and layout the curve points at the ends according to plan. I added 4" to the beam, 2" each side, that would probably be enough for the few inches more length you'll probably get out of the scarfed plywood.
