DHBP NW Road Trip Report

Fred Slyfield and I headed off on a road trip this week to float some new water and test drive a few decoys. We discovered that:

1) a 19 foot Bankes isn't large enough for 2 guys 1 dog and 39 bazillion (or is that a crap-load of?) decoys;

2) 135,000 ruddy ducks, 33,500 (a gross underestimate) hen buffleheads, 70,100 (a really crappy underestimate) shovelers, and 50,500 scaup doesn't mean good gunning if the weather is beautiful;

3) Upper Klamath Lake is a neat place even if it is 20 miles long and 8 miles wide and on average 5 feet deep;

4) Matt Cottingham and his folks are really great people;

5) even if you float a common eider decoy in Upper Klamath Lake or the Lower Columbia River, you aren't guaranteed that you'll decoy any eiders;

6) quail cooked in secret sauce in the duck boat at 10 am is truly a great breakfast;

7) sleep is over-rated.

I am sure that Fred will add more pictures and embellish the story tomorrow when he gets home and I will let him identify all of the carvers represented in the spread.

We joined the sunrise club.

About half the spread, but water skiing would be more appropriate.

The Bankes looked great up against the willow and rock.

The numbers of birds was unbelievable.

Eiders can swim in Upper Klamath.

Yukon Mike's canvasback liked swimming in the Columbia.

We found that Bill's eider didn't attract any eider friends on the Columbia, but he did attract a hen surf scoter 25 miles from the salt.

That if some want to talk about crap, I want to talk about boobies, banded boobies at that.

Brad and Fred -
Sorry i missed you guys on Wednesday. Hope the rest of the trip works out, tell Matt to take you on the river hunt.
If you guys are up to it, head on down south to hunt with us in the Sacto Valley/SF Bay later this season.

Wonderful pictures...

I lived out there in Gold Beach, OR...Never got to hunt that region for ducks but that area is an awesome sight...Can't remember but I believe when you look north you can see the edges of the Crater Lake...

Somehow I remember there being a few geysers around that area too...

Absolutely Awesome,

Kristan

Judging from your picture it looks like it would be one tough slalom course on water skis! Thanks for the great pics.

Brad & Fred

i enjoyed your stay. wish the birds would have cooperated more but i guess that is why they call it hunting.

take care

hope to see you guys later in the season

Matt, Thanks for the great hospitality, you and your folks are great!

Kere is a shot of King Can trying his best to decoy in a big one.

Overall it was a great trip with some great (ok too great) weather with some new areas seen and hunted,

Fred, I know you have some other pictures to add...

Today we had rain, wind, hail, thunder, sun, puffy clouds repeated 3 times but sometimes in different order. We whacked wigeon in the diver spread and we did get some hen can flybys and some ringers zoomed us several times. At that other spot I showed you.

Nice pictures. They bring back good memories of some really fun DHBP hunts at Agency and Upper Klamath Lakes many years ago. Can't believe the weather, some years the marsh is starting to freeze up by the first couple of weeks of Nov. Were you guys just chasing divers, or did you try for puddlers too?
Paul

Paul we were just set up for divers, I'll get some more picts posted as soon as I can. Had to work all weekend in the hills.
