Did I limit out?

Al, you surely capture the essence of what hunting is about. Success is not always measured by the bag count.

Thanks so much, Wendell. It took me longer to realize what you said, but it sure is true.

Excellent story Al and with scenery like that I say you "limit out" every time you go hunting!

Thanks for sharing those awesome photos as well.

Sure glad you enjoyed the story, Mark. As for the scenery, New Mexico has been blessed. Sometimes we have a tendency to overlook or look beyond things especially if it includes a desert. The beauty here is breathtaking.

Al-

Pretty pictures....that snow goose one reminds me of TV "static" there's so many geese

two more weekends left of ducks here...

Dani

Thanks, Dani. I enjoyed what you said about the snow geese----very true! You are right about so little time left to hunt but it has been fun and then it will be even more fun to begin that "anticipation" process all over again!

If you were me this season one duck per hunt would be your limit (all I've gotten this year have been black ducks). But I hear what you are saying. I'm very happy to take one of those beautiful waterfowl home at the end of a day on the saltmarsh.

Steve, you are very fortunate to be able to take home that black duck. In my last 6 hunts, I took home the following: 3, 1, 0, 0, 0, and 0. In nine minutes, I am heading out the door to go again. Duck hunting is in my blood whether or not I shoot anything.

I would happily trade a goose egg with that scenery for a limit at my local marsh....once anyway!

I'm glad you liked those pictures. It helps that "goose-egg" not be so bad, sometimes.

That's what I'm talkin' about! Great morning Al! I've had a lot of mornings like that this year, and I still love going out more each time!

Most people think I'm crazy. I'm always asked, "how can you sit out there all day?" or "what do you do all day?". It's hard to explain to someone who's never experienced it. I guess I just love being outside, spending time with my dog, taking in some fresh air and watching birds and blowing my call! I know what you're saying about that familiar smell too!!! Every step I take in the mud brings up bubbles of lovely aroma to the surface and I am reminded that I'm out doing what I love.

Well said, Derek. I had to smile when I read about what you said about the "familiar smell, too"! So true.

Al, you truly understand what it is all about....for you and the dogs.

Thanks so much, Dave. When sitting in the blind and you are at peace---things are just plain different. I can't quite put my finger on it but it sure makes each and every hunt, exciting and definitely something to look forward to. In just a few minutes, I do know that Pepper will be up on the back of the front seat with her paws and giving my right ear a lick or two as we are heading to the spot. She gets so excited that she can't even finish her food in the morning.

As everyone has said, you nailed it. However, I also feel that I have "limited out" if I am sitting there looking at a beautiful sunrise or even blowing cold rain or snow if I am not doing my wife's little chores! Doh!!!! Trip.

Derek,

That's exactly it.

A few hunts ago I got a black duck only about 20 minutes after arriving for an afternoon hunt. Still I stuck around until about 3:30.

Granted, occasionallly something other than a black duck will show in this saltmarsh, so there is always hope of taking another duck, but it is highly unlikely.

Possibly getting another duck was the smallest part of why I stayed that day. The saltmarsh offers so much more. Sometimes in the off-season I'll anchor the boat in this same cove, bring along a sandwich, sit back in the bottom of the duckboat, and just take it all in for awhile.

And Al, thank you so much. Your narratives and photos are touching in many ways. We lost our Golden Retriever in March; somehow hearing of your dog experiences helps take away that pain. It's hard to explain.

Thats a SWEET lookin decoy rig youve got set up! Great pics, I only saw one snow goose this year and it flew away in the dark before we could really get a good glimpse at it!
