did you ever have that one dog

Over my life time I have had many Retrievers (Labs). A bunch of really good ones. But ! I'm sure most of you have had that once of a life time dog. Mine was named Henry of the Hudson. What made this dog so much greater then any others I have ever had, He was given to me by my late friend Mike. Mikes wife use to make pies and cakes all the time. Mike had two other dogs. Mike's wife put all the bake goods on the dinning room table. None of the other dogs were smart enough to get to the goodies. But one day young Henry found out he had great jumping powers, Henry made it to the pies and the cakes. Covered in all kinds of frosting and berries. Henry! had to go, Or Mike did, Mike knowing I trained and breaded dogs came to me for help. His dog was about a year old and I had two small boys. So I was a little worried about taking this fine looking yellow lab. But once the kids saw him. It was all over, I had to go for it. Henry was a red fox looking yellow lab. Pretty as anything and he loved kids. If you call humping loving. But we took care of that.
At the same time Henry came I got hurt really bad at work. So I got to spend lots of time with him. I could hardly walk. Everyday I would take Henry down to our duck camp and train and play with him. I saw stuff in this dog that I never saw before. He would go into places and find dummies that other dogs would never even try. Henry became the best hunting dog in my area for many many years. He was my best friend ever. And I know I was his. He got me through so much more then a day of hunting. He loved my kids and everyone that crossed his path. Rest in peace buddy. Its been many years you been gone. But every duck season I think of you first. There so much more to tell about this Dog. But I would have to write for days. I know you all have a story like this. Please share.

Thanks

My once in a lifetime dog was a female Black Lab named Mandy. She died of cancer in April of 2015. She could do it all, waterfowl and upland. I miss her SO much, I can hardly type this post because I am crying so hard.

I feel your pain and I cried just like the day my dad past. I had to do it the hard way and put Henry down . He lived eighteen years. I was lucky enough to have him for seventeen of them. He had the big C also. He hunted to the day he dead. Love is painful , but I'll take that kind of pain all the time. Because! that pain is earned. And! no one can ever take that love away from us.

Jet is my once in a lifetime dog. I have had others but she is the one. Great on upland & ducks. Geese are her favorite, especially cripples. Awesome pet too. She is 10 and slowing down but otherwise doing well.

Still have her, my ol girl Missy. 12 yrs old this past dec. and has slowed considerably.Easiest lab I,ve ever trained from day 1. In her lifetime shes probably only not recovered 1/2 dozen cripples which is saying something for the marshs I hunt her in.Her favorite has always been geese.Seen her slowing down considerably end of 2016 season and purchased a lil CLF fireball last spring. Hunted the pup this season and am very pleased with her progression. Did get the ol girl out for a couple pond goose hunts last of our season and she got to make several retrieves without having to swim hard . She loved it. Have to see how her physical strength holds up over this year to see if she,ll be able to do that next season. I feel she doesn,t have long left and dreading the day she passes. Her predecessor was a chessy male that I cryed like a baby when he finally passed in my lap.

Dogs of a lifetime a both a blessing and a curse.

I am sure my 11 year old Kodi is my Dog of a lifetime.....

Missy is a wonderful dog and seems to be one of the loves of your life. Remember dogs have shorter lives then us. There is nothing we can do about that. But on the other hand if you weren't in Missy life. Her life could of been boring as heck. Your doing the best we as dog lovers can. Making the best of everyday for our wonderful friends. Look at it like this, other then your love ones. Missy will always be in your heart. She not gone yet so stop thinking of that day. Hunt with her until she tells you it enough. You might be surprised she just might get a second wind. Old Henry did.

Dogs enter our life's in special ways. Nothing like sitting alone in a snow storm with your dog. They never ask for a cup of our hot coffee. Never want to go home early because their cold. Just when you want to love them even more. Their short stay on earth is over. But there is not anyone of us that would change a thing. Maybe dog lives are short because all they give us is love. And that's the way GOD wanted it. In the hunting world nothing is better then being loved by your best friend.
