It was opening day here in upstate NY in the Southern Zone on Saturday October 19. It was a cold start to the morning. As day light started to get brighter the sound of ducks waking up started getting louder. The sounds that each of us love so much. In this area of the Hudson River Valley we have placed hundreds of wood duck boxes over the years. And ! I am here to tell you they work. I been doing this for most of my life and I'm sixty years old. On Saturday I saw the most wood duck I have ever seen at one time on the Hudson. There were woods in some creek beds where I never saw ducks before we placed boxes in them. The birds were so pretty and bright. It made me very proud of the work our group does every year. We jumped woodies everywhere on the river we went. Back in the good old day we were lucky to get one or two woodies a year. We limited out on Saturday on wood ducks. And there were plenty left to go where they wanted to go. If you live in a area where wood ducks have lived. Build or buy a box it will be worth your time. Its one duck we can save and help them produce their population for years to come. A bad wood duck box is better then none. Remember they nested in holes in trees among other things. Way before the first box was built.

A true testament to conservation and hunters giving back right there!

I paddle small rivers to deer hunt and love hearing and seeing the woodies flying and feeding while I hunt! Putting back is the name of the game when it comes to wildlife management! Congrats on seeing your hard work payoff Anthony!
 
Thank you my friend, most everyone gives back in one way or the other. I can not built a thing. But God gave me a give of talking other people into doing it. A director! I guess of BS but it works. Over the past 37 or so years my little group put out over a thousand nest. We all know they don't all produce ducks. And the one's that do some get eaten. But if you put a thousand out there over the years and only ten percent work, You still got a whole lot of ducks. God Bless and Thank you!
 
Are you a member of a waterfowling group such as South Shore Waterfowlers? I've been looking for a similar group to get involved with since moving up to the Catskills years ago but haven't found any.

I am the Director of a club called the Towers Duck Club. Which is also part of a Club called the Hudson River Waterfowl Protective Association(HRWPA). We are members of the Greene County Federation of Sportsmen and the New York State Conservation Council. The club has been around for about forty years.We are small but get lots of work done. Over thousand Wood Duck Boxes over the years. Mallard nest and tens of thousands of plants and seeds planted.
