Dog allergy to golf balls?

I'm serious, have any of you guys ever heard of anyone's dog being allergic to golf balls? The Buns had her face swell up pretty bad overnight and all I can think of was either she bit a wasp or it was due to a golf ball she was chewing on last evening. By the time I noticed and took it away from her she'd gotten through the white and into the outer part of the core, but didn't swell up right away. I woke up at about 3am because she was scratching at her face so much. She's fine, she just looks goofy, and the swelling seems to be going down now.

Any info out there?

Mike,
Not sure about any allergy issues but I certainly would not let her chew on golf balls. I can't see any good coming from it and can see issues with the rubber wrapping and core being no good for her digestive system.

I agree Dave, I normally watch her pretty carefully because she's a sneaky little bugger, but she got ahead of me on this one.

She's eating ok right now and seems fine except that her jowls are still huge.

Mike-

I have never heard of it. Perhaps some latex in the rubber strands or any chance it has something to do with a broken tooth?

Hey Mike,

Not sure what the cause would be but my vet has me in the habit of keeping generic benadryl on hand for my dog. Two 25 mg tabs 2-3 times a day if she reacts to something. Haven't had to use it often but it does work. Jim

If it is or isn't latex related, be sure to let your vet and vet technicians know about the reaction. Wouldn't want the pup to have an adverse reaction at vet's while they are examining her, with their gloves on.

I decided to try the Benadryl just to see what would happen and I noticed she stopped scratching at her head, and then konked out for the night. Today the swelling is pretty much gone except for an extra neck roll that wasn't there before, but it doesn't seem to bother her. That was so weird. It had to be the golf ball.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Mike

Not a good idea. My close friend's very large lab ate a golf ball that his son hit into a field. Took him to the vet, x-rays revealed he had three golf balls in his stomach. An operation and $3000 dollars later the dog is just fine, and no golf balls in the house.
