What do you feed your dog? Maverick is 3 months and I'm wondering what food I should be feeding. With so many different foods on the market, my head is still spinning from reading ingredients and reviews. Most sites are giving mid-range reviews on what I thought to be top brands: Eukanuba, Purina Pro Plan, Loyal... They seem to favor the REALLY expensive stuff. I'm not trying to be cheap, just wondering if there's any additional benifit.
 
I"ve always used Iams Large breed puppy for the first 4 or 5 months and after that started mixing Lamb&rice 50/50 till they are a year old.

Bev and I use Iams large dog puppy food for almost the first year with our pups. Then we stay with either the Iams or Eukanuba brands for the older dogs. One thing Bev does is save those bar codes and when she has so many of them she sends them in. We end up getting a free bag of food. I don't know about the other dog owners but one thing we don't like in dog food would be the dyes. Some brands have had up to 4 and 5 food coloring dyes in them.
Bev also suppliments with her own recipe of white and brown rice, chicken, chicken stock, and vegetables that she grinds up for this concoction. The dogs love it. We add it to the dry food that we give them in the morning. Bev normally makes enough of it for a 30 day supply.
Kevin, have you ever looked at a sleek looking black lab that has a shiny coat? I believe that has a lot to do with diet.

Kevin, We have fed Iams and now feed Nutro Large dog. The only reason we quite Iams was our last lab had a jaw problem and couldn't eat the small bits w/o spilling all over the floor. Nutro has been good to us and the dogs for 20+ years so "if it an't broke don't fix it". A premium food has all the nutritional benifits PLUS since it is more concintrated there is less to clean up in the yard. We have switched from Nutro Max to a cheaper Nutro and saved $20.00 a bag but still pay about $1.00 a pound. Oh well, they have to eat. Good Luck.
 
I feed my dogs Diamond Maintenance in the Summer and Diamond Hi-Energy during hunting season and cold weather. It is a Missouri Company and they are duck hunters. Dogs did very well on their large breed puppy mix also
 
I have been feeding my dog Earthborn Holistics, Great Plains Fest. It is on the expensive side. I understand it to be privately made, ie not made by some major manufacturer under one of their many labels.

My dog has has never gotten onto a good eating schedule and she is not food driven. She will take most of the night to eat her food. She is what I would call a grazer. With this food, she looks to eat. She now comes to me if she feels I have waited too long to put the food down. Never does it make it more than 20 mins in the bowl. That's good for this dog. Before her, I never saw a meal last more than 5 mins.
 
Another dog in the house might change that, my 2 labs eat face to face and have cleaned up in as little as 48 seconds. ;<)
 
I was in your position about a year and a half ago when I was about to get my griffon, Blue. After a bunch of research I chose Canidae (the all life stages) and have been very happy with it. I think a 35lb bag is about $40-$45. The canidae seems to be very high quality and likely comparable to Wellness, etc. which can be about $60 for a 30lb bag. Seemed to be a good choice in the middle. The number of choices is overwhelming!
 
I feed both my labs Nature's balance / duck and potato. a little pricey but nothing but duck and potato. None of the fillers you see in other brands. Can be found at Petco.
 
I felt I wasnt getting good results from Eukanuba anymore..pretty sure they changed their formula..switched over to Pro Plan...My lab is looking noticibly healthier and he cleans it all up...always left some eukanuba in the dish
 
I second Modin's recommendation. Compare the ingredient labels. Check out Diamond's "Naturals" line. I feed my Labs "Extreme Athlete." High protien and fat content...all from useful sources.

I had fed proplan for a while and didnt really like the body weight my pups were keeping so i switched to EUK 30/20 and havent looked back. Also diamond naturals sold at tractor supply is a real good food for the price you may want to look at it.

We are up to four dogs that have been brought up on Diamond puppy, then switched to Diamond Performance, or Premium, ...or whatever it is... it's the green bag. We've been out on trips where we have to keep the other people's dogs out of my dog's food. I don't mind sharing, most of these people are friends, but they have their own dog food, and the dogs won't touch it until I put ours away.

I think all dogs like something different now and then. Now that the field corn is starting to get milky kernels, my dogs are raiding the neighboring field for a treat. I guess it's better than deer terds! I just wish they didn't drag the whole stalk into the yard.
