I've helped with a few hunt tests in the last years or so - and it's a mix. For the most part it is dead game (game that is raised for the purpose, and "euthanized" the day of the event) - but upper levels include live fliers (ducks tossed and then shot), and upland tests include live birds (chukhars, quail, or pheasant). In the latter the primary utilization is to provide evidence that the dog can scent, locate, and flush the bird, and that it will then sit/stop to wing and shot.William
Back when I was involved with field trials and hunt tests there were no live birds. They were dead. Has the sport moved to using shackled birds instead of dead birds? I have my own story about competition dead birds and my thoughts on them but don't have the time to share it now. Maybe later. But let's just say I found some of the common practices to be mistreatment.
