Bird dog training ban act

William

Back when I was involved with field trials and hunt tests there were no live birds. They were dead. Has the sport moved to using shackled birds instead of dead birds? I have my own story about competition dead birds and my thoughts on them but don't have the time to share it now. Maybe later. But let's just say I found some of the common practices to be mistreatment.
I've helped with a few hunt tests in the last years or so - and it's a mix. For the most part it is dead game (game that is raised for the purpose, and "euthanized" the day of the event) - but upper levels include live fliers (ducks tossed and then shot), and upland tests include live birds (chukhars, quail, or pheasant). In the latter the primary utilization is to provide evidence that the dog can scent, locate, and flush the bird, and that it will then sit/stop to wing and shot.

It appears to be tied to Iowa wanting to end greyhound race simulcasting at casinos.

Then why doesn’t Iowa just pass it at the state level?

Either there’s no appetite for it in Iowa or something else is going on.

Eric, I havent played the game in over 10 years. So I cant speak of current though. Again, my short stint in hunt tests was wtih my first dog, I took her to master hunter, and I knew then that I would never play those games again with any other dog. Just wasnt my cup of tea. But when I did play the games, they would release live mallard, with a hand toss and have 2 shooters shoot the bird at point blank range. But only when there were enough volunteers, otherwise they would set u launchers and launch fresh dead birds. So I never understood the need for the live birds. Generally they did the live bird shooting with the younger beginner level dogs and launchers with the older master level dogs. I didnt know if that was to create more excitement for the younger pups, and to keep the test more fair for the older more advanced tests? But i do remember if they had enough people to be shooters, of live birds, the beginner level always got priority of this.

To the latter question, I don't have a problem with hare chasing... then again, I don't know that I would have had enough of a problem with cock-fighting or bear-baiting to insist on banning them. Our societal tastes change, and individually we have to live with that (or move). I do suspect at some point in this country hunting will be directly in the crosshairs.
My buddy who films for kuiu says this ALL the time. He truly believes there wont be any hunting in the next 10-15 years. There will be civil war before that happens though.... or.... there will be so much poaching going on, they will have to bring back hunting seasons to prevent everything from going extinct.

Pointing and flushing breed (upland) events only use live birds.

The HRC International Grand hunt test offers a live bird upland scenario as an option for the 5th evaluation.
Ya I assumed this would hurt upland the most. Theres a ranch here that has a kennel for Drathaars and they raise penned pheasant and chukar. Not being able to use live birds would certainly be an issue.

Believe it or not, but our Minnesota legislators actually banned greased pig racing. Never attended a greased pig race, but have friends that say it's a blast. Really, I think there are people who just find enjoyment in being mettlesome in other people's affairs. It is a slippery slope and only a matter of time before we are in their cross hairs. Some folks complain that the NRA wont budge on "commonsense issues" like assault rifles. I personally don't own an AR-15 and never will, but I fight for the rights of people that do.

MN Statute 343.36 GREASED PIG CONTESTS AND TURKEY SCRAMBLES.
No person shall operate, run or participate in a contest, game, or other like activity, in which a pig, greased, oiled or otherwise, is released and wherein the object is the capture of the pig, or in which a chicken or turkey is released or thrown into the air and wherein the object is the capture of the chicken or turkey. Any violation of this section is a misdemeanor.

You should build at least one or two for your arsenal. They are just so much fun, and I wouldnt hunt varmint with anything else at this point. I have a nice case that carries both of mine and when I go, depending on where I make a stand, I pick one or the other. Big open flat, where I can safely shoot out to 500 yards, I pull my long range one. Closed in canyons and wooded areas, safest shot being 200 yards, I pull my close range one. I even just completed an AR pistol in 300 blkout, and thats going to wreak havoc on beaver next winter. I need to rid of some and completed the furbear class, that is required, so I can start saving a few ponds where they are dropping too many trees where I waterfowl hunt. The pistol I worry about a touch, as I dont want a true SBR and have to get permission to cross state lines, but thats a constant back and forth battle on what is allowed and not allowed and I have a true pistol buffer, on hand, in the event they get sideways on the use of braces.

I dont need anymore, but they are fun fun to have and they really do open the world of hunting up in a whole new way. Suppressors need to be had right now, they are just so freaking easy to get and the deals are just dumb right now. I really didnt need another, but a company had some discounted slightly and then dropped an additional 20% easter coupon on top of the sale. It made the suppressors, that I enjoy using the most, only $390 shipped. No tax stamp right now, and its only taking 8-10 days for approval to take home. Not sure it will ever be this easy again to get them.

I don’t think this is the place for such comments. Period.
Be mindful that not everyone on this site is Christian and that there may actually be members of this family practicing other faiths.
I'll totally defer to you and Eric as the forum is yours to run as you see fit - and I greatly appreciate that it generally remains focused on its topics and that silliness/ugliness is kept to a minimum (thank you!) - but just wanted to say I took no offense at any of the posts. I'm of the opinion that there is value to (respectful) back-and-forth on such topics when they arise in forum-related discussions (and I think hunting dog training is related).
