Dog mourns at casket of fallen Navy SEAL

If this does not get you a little chocked up nothing will! By Scott Stump TODAY.com contributor updated 8/25/2011 9:54:58 AM ET 2011-08-25T13:54:58

Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson lay in a coffin, draped in an American flag, in front of a tearful audience mourning his death in Afghanistan. Soon an old friend appeared, and like a fellow soldier on a battlefield, his loyal dog refused to leave him behind.

Tumilson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson’s casket in a heart-wrenching image taken at the funeral service in Tumilson’s hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS.

Really sad to realize, this hero will never know the impact this photo will have on America as it travels thru the internet.

And it surely will.

Shane, thanks so much for posting this. I watched it on TV when they had the broadcast.
This all reminded me of the day (in 1974) I drove to Oshkosh, WI, to meet a dear friend of mine. We decided to go for a ride and while passing the cemetery Dick said, "Al, I just have to show you this." He then drove into the cemetery and up to a tomb stone that had a dog curled up on top of the grave site, carved in white marble. Seems that the master had died and was buried. His hunting dog moped about the house for a few days and then disappeared. The family searched and searched for him but to no avail. By chance, they drove the 5 miles back to the cemetery and found him curled up, laying on his master's fresh grave site, and that is where the pup took his last breath of air. No one knows how in the world this dog got there, but he did.
I have always kicked myself for not taking a picture of that.
This also reminded me of one of my favorite books, "Where the Red Fern Grows" Tom's post said it all.
