Thinking about names for a new pup and wondered what some of you all call your best friend. I'll start. Jet is my 10 year old lab and is irreplaceable. Previous dog were Chance, Memphy, & Dutchess.

I like names that are a little quirky.
My first dog was name Nippet. He was named after Barney Fife's saying "Nip it in the bud". My current dog Deuce is registered Griffs Duke Nippet Too...i figured Deuce fit him and the full name rather well. Should have just called him Nippet because for the first 6 months he was called that a lot.

If I find a female dog that I like it will probably be Pella, for Barney Sings A Capella. I'd likely go with Otis if I have another male.

Well, I've had quite a few dogs and always liked names with hard consonants as i figure they are easier for dogs to figure out. Frankly, now I feel it doesn't make any difference. My dogs names have been.
SPORTY
SPORTY II
SPARKY
DAISY
SUSIE
PEPPER
JESSIE
MAX
QUEEN
MUGSY
BOB
ZACK
OTTO

I'm allergic, so I depend on friend's dogs.

My buddy Nick has named his labs after mythical characters. (What can I say, the man went to Yale . . . .) Perseus (known as Percy) seems a good fit. Thor maybe not so much--he's a sweet pup.

When I was a kid, we got a Springer pup about when I was at the peak of my obsession with "The Hobbit". I'm really glad my parents didn't let me name him "Bilbo", but at age 10 didn't understand why the idea made my uncles laugh so hard.

i am disappointed if i pick a name and the registration comes back with a number showing the name is a duplicate

recent dogs - a setter named Osthaus after the famous painter who did so many setters (recently passed)

Griffin - after the heraldry symbol (semi retired)

current golden is Macallan - they are a Scottish breed after all

We have always let the dog name themselves. My first yellow lab earned the name Yukon Jack because he was a yellow licker. Waterwalker aka Walker would not stay in the boat. Bailey was not named after the liquer but the British word for bailiff meaning "keeper".

Beagles......cookie,booboo,freckles, buster, pebbles

Labs...........Bess, Gator,Red, Corky

Bird dogs....Buckshot( pointer), Penny( pointer) Sally( setter) Maggie I( setter) and Maggie II( setter)
Two setters with the same name? I was calling my grandchildren by their parents name. I knew I would call the new pup by the same name as the dog she replaced sooooooo.

Coonhound... Blue( Black and Tan coonhound)......this was a mistake!

Housedogs....Sam( Shepard mix) Buttons( min poodle mix) Emma (dachshund)

I think that’s it.

If I get a girl dog in the future, I'll most likely call her Bob.

I've got Drake (cliché I know for a boy duck dog but he came to me named that way) and Kenzie. However, dogs in my family generally get nicknames as we learn about each other....Drake is often called Drakey-poo (he's such a little love slut) and Kenzie is Kenzie-loon or just Looney Toon (he could be pretty dang goofy as a youngster).

Yes, Wendell, sometimes it's tough to pick out a name. Apparently the hardest was a Lab/Golden cross that we brought home as a 'family' dog. I told my three kids to pick out a name as I figured he was going to be their dog. Well, after almost two weeks without a name I said "Until you figure out a proper name we'll call him BOB". You guessed it, that was his name for the 5 years that he was with us. Died after an ulcerated lung collapsed while I was out west on a hunting trip - they're all tough but that one was close to home.

We have always followed the breeders wishes with whatever letter group their litter was we started the name using that letter. We have had the following call names;

Abraham (Abe)
Sabrina
Jericho
Siren
Lily
Maxx

In the last 15 years. We always wait to see what they look like and how they act. Maxx was named when we got him but he should have been "Tank"

Good luck with your name search.

Most our family dogs were named after a characteristic

First dog was Rocco because he would always chew on rocks
Then Twizzler because her tail had a twist on the end
Brothers dog is Nitro because he has so much energy
Had several beagles at one point with Boone, Sheila, Jesse, James, Gunner

Moms dog is Grace Anne or Gracie

Current dog which is a beagle I found on the road as a stray, son (4years old) named him Joey

single syllables seem to work.
From first lab, in 1976
Brant
Coot
Can
Bill
To the present. Cap. This one's full name is Runamuck's Pato Cappucino.
A long time ago, when I first read James Lamb Free's, Training Your Retriever, I took note that making things simpler for the dog made the process a mite simpler.

I like single-syllable names, I think they are easier for giving commands. My dogs kind of follow a duck hunting and Western US trend-my male Chessie was Sage, and my current dog is female lab who goes by Cedar. Cedar references the common basin and range tree but also is a nod to the white cedar found in classic sneak boats and decoys! I also like duck names for dogs, if Cedar had been a male there's a good chance she would go by Blue, short for Bluebill.
Some names of my friend's dogs that I like-
Rip
Boss
Cache
Zip
Rem (short for Remington)
Coot

Some cool names in that book though!

Interestingly, my first dog from a breeder had the last name Tolkein.... He owns Goldberry Kennels :)

Retrievers: Tar, Digger, Mudd, Brant, Gunner, Payton, Camo.

Mastiffs: Thor, Nyx, Vica.

Always wanted to name a dog Spike or Angus, but someone always talks me out of it.

Axe would be a solid name too.

I am a fan of Leroy and Jethro for dogs. My personal favorite, and what i will name mine when i eventually get around to having a dog, is "Jabba the Mutt"

Okay, going back a few years,

Sheba Lab/St Bernard. She hunted briefly, lost to cancer at 18 mo.s
Cassie Lab
Meg Lab
Molly Lab
Jazz Lab
Piper Lab From Al Hansen. One of the easiest to train!
