Dog refusing to retrieve with e collar on??

With a young dog you should be more active in the use of treat rewards for doing something right. Use for those thing were the dog is much further away than a long line leash where the dog knows he can get away with not responding. You my have the stimulus for the collar set to high. Start by having it set very low to give just some irritation. Some dogs may be more sensitive than others. Only work with one command at a time to get the response you want. If you start by using it for too many commands, dog may freeze from confusion. Work one problem at a time and break up the training by go back to the things the dog does well. Read and reread methods for using the collar correctly.

The only stimulus she had was the 1 second tap on level one she reacted like it was an itch. The only reason i even considered the e collar was first , the retreiver club i belong to uses them and trains with them , secondly there was an incident i witnessed years ago on the marsh where the party next to me had two seperate groups hunting 60-70 yds apart. One group dropped a brant, the other groups dog broke and started to retrieve the other groups brant with the handler yelling come, come, come. The dog did not listen and began to chase the cripple, the group that shot the brant i guess did not realize the dog had broke and was enroute to retrive their bird. Well the water swatting began to kill the cripple and the dog was shot in the water. After that incident i swore my dog will never do that, if someone ever shot my pup, you would see me on the news in handcuffs, rudy is very intense and i do believe sometimes her intensity kinda sidelines my commands at a distance, so i guess im decided to use the collar as a safety precaution. May sound crazy but thats my reasoning

I understand your reasoning. I trained the Lab I had to stop when I told it to so she would not chase something out into the street or get to close to some thing like a skunk. She was on high octane drive all the time. I understand what you want to achieve.

That is rudy to a T. High energy with drive snd intensity that is uncandid, with her being my first real hunting dog, we are both learning but i wanna be safe

Your dog is "bugging" very common. Whose program are you you using to collar condition your dog? Take the manual that came with your collar and throw it in the garbage. Check out some of the collar conditioning DVD's available. I used total e collar conditioning, by Mike Lardy. Never take advise from anyone with out knowing their credentials. There is too much smoke and mirrors in the dog world, especially on forums.

Why not just throw the collar away? Or if you really think you must use it, find a real retriever trainer and have them help you. Problem for you is that you may train things you are not aware of into your dog by mistake, and end up with behaviors you don't want. And the thing is, you likely won't have a really polished dog until she is 3 or 4 anyway. Just an opinion and some may disagree, but what's the rush?
