Drain plug

Have to put a drain plug in my Southbay DB. Any one know what the transom is made of? Regular ply or marine, my boat is a real early boat. Don't want a chance of delaminating the transom.
Too old to get under the stern deck. Ideas appreciated.

I do not know what's within the transom. However - were I installing such a plug (which I heartily endorse!) - I would take the belt-and-suspenders approach. After boring the hole for the brass tube, I would coat the inside of the transom with a sealing coat of straight epoxy. After that's cured, I would thoroughly bed (as in slather) the tube with3M 5200.

BTW: If you do not have the flaring tool for the tube, I am planning to buy one. Just let me know how I can help.

All the best,

I just ordered one from West Marine. I was surprised it was only $13 - usually over $30 on other sites. I'll gladly mail mine down if you need to borrow it - or even bring it this weekend if I have it in time.

All the best,

SJS

Capt. Geminski,
I have a flaring tool and used it to install my drain plug when I replaced the transom on my sneak box. It works great and I definitely recommend getting one, even if not use a lot. If you would like I can lend you mine. just PM me your mailing address.

Thanks Steve and Zane, just placed a order for the flaring tool and parts from West. Looks pretty easy. Thanks for the leads. Will have one on LI when it arrives...

I have an early south bay. My boat is all fiberglass only about 1/2'' thick. I do have a piece of plywood on the inside then the boat, then a 1/2'' piece of plywood on the outside then the motor board. All is sandwiched with 5 bolts.

I am not saying all the boats were built the same, this is how my boat was built.

One of these day I will add a drain plug in the bottom the type that is a flange and takes a 1/2 brass plug
