Drove to see the Rio Grande

Chip and I headed out from the house this morning on the Mule to go down and see how much water was flowing in the Rio Grande. I guess I must have just missed the two individuals that had been there where we pulled up because this is what it looked like at the river's edge.

I have tossed bumpers from this spot however never again knowing how lucky my dogs have been not to cut a pad on broken clays or beer bottles.

When I see things like this I often wonder what it must look like at their homes where they live. Where did we go wrong in our teachings?

I commenced to pick it all up which was not a big deal however it did impact me. It quickly reminded me of the time I walked into this spot in Alaska in 1967 on a Dall sheep hunt. As I approached this spot there was a small lake below me with sheer cliffs around. It was as if God and I were the only two there until I took a closer look. Some sheep hunters had built a camp there a few years past and when they were done, everything was left strewn about including tin cans, booze bottles, army sleeping bags and you name it. It was gosh awful. Well I commenced to bury it all and then cover that with a layer of rocks. It was down right embarrassing to think that a hunter/hunters would do that.

AL, Those guys aren't hunters. At least real hunters. They probably are more like dirt bags. This kind of stuff happens all over and is the kind of thing that gives all hunters a bad name. It's too bad. Maybe someday they will wake up. I have two young boys and I am teaching them how my Dad taught me. My oldest one gets it already, and I knew this when we were walking along the flood plain turkey hunting and he looked up at me and said. "Dad, I feel like I'm in a painting." In that moment I knew he saw the world like I do. Way to go picking up other peoples' garbage and leading by example. What makes me the most mad about it - is you were so tied up cleaning up, you didn't get any pictures of the river! Jeff

Littering is a sign of bad character. People with vastly different interests throw their garbage out the window of their cars, leave it behind after camping, dump on other peoples or public property. they all have one thing in common. They think little of others, they are lazy, and are of low moral character. We all see it. It is disappointing. But thankfully, [people like you are around to do something about it. So I thank you for picking up after them.

Inbred idiots....I keep a 5 gallon bucket in my vehicle that I use to pick up trash at the boat ramp or public hunting area access parking. I figure I can't clean up the whole world but it makes me feel better for cleaning up a little piece of it.

Jeff, when you son made that statement, "Dad, I feel like I'm in a painting.", that had to be one of those impact moments that you'll never forget the rest of your life. What a great thing for a young person to say.

All of my life I have seen examples of what people do, whether it be at a football field, hunting camps, or maybe a city park. I still remember being a boy scout and the time our leader said to us, "When we leave this area, it will be cleaner than when we got here." That phrase I tried to instill upon all of the kids that I saw in my classroom over the years.

PS
I'll take some more pictures of the Rio Grande---I promise!

Well said, Greg. I have often wondered about certain people. The ones that toss it out blatantly but realize that someone else will pick it up. We happen to have a BLM ranger that doesn't hesitate in writing a ticket for such things. That I am grateful for.

Thanks for what you do, Dwight. I agree with you. Self satisfaction.
