Duck Boat Paint - Alaska

Anybody know how to get duck boat paint in Alaska? Looking for marsh brown. Turns out paint cannot be sent through Canada to Alaska.

Jesse,
Been thinking of you and lost your email addy. I believe I can ship 3-4 gallons for a relatively reasonable price through one of the trucking companies we use. I have the size and weight and will get a quote. Give me your email addy again and I can get you that quote to Anchorage.
I also recently talked with FedExGround and I can ship via them but can ship no more than 2 gallons per box and it has to go hazmat with the attendant charges.

Hi Jesse,

Did you ever do anything with those plans we worked on? I was in Alaska for a couple weeks, we had a great time from the Yukon River to Valdez, but unfortunately we didn't get down your way.

Lou, a few years ago you mailed paint to me up here. What has changed since 2005 that you can't parcel post the stuff?

And.....do you have any knowledge of that Rustoleum primer for latex paint on aluminium? I have a quart of it, but didn't need to use it so it just sits on the shelf in the shop.

All the regulations on shipping have changed drastically. I can't even ship paint to Canada. I have to have my dealer come over, pick it up and ship it from the Canadian side.
I probably shipped your stuff via US Postal Service and could do it then. They will no longer ship paint unless the flash point is well over 114 degrees and I think the flashpoint of FME is just over 104.

Trucking companies don't have as tight of regulations and that's what I'm going to check on for Jesse. I have the size and weight of a package of 4 gallons and can then get a class and cost for shipping. Might be cheaper for Jesse to come to Michigan, hunt with us and take the paint back home with him. ;)

homeland security dorks....we have boats to paint! what are they thinking.

TGI Freight has offices here in Anchorage and might have a route running up the Parks highway each week and could drop it off for Jesse. I don't know if they are national though. Carlile is another big less than load feight company that has stuff up and down the west coast.

OR you could ship it to me in Anchorage (zip 99504) and I can pick it up at the freight office and then meet Jesse half way for a hunt and give it to him. He will have to approve that first.

Ahem,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, get in line buddy! I'll gladly deliver the paint to Jesse's front door and he won't have to meet me halfway. Doesn't matter if it's one gallon or four gallons, all it will cost him is my gas money. :>) :>)

As long as you are on your scooter I don't think he will mind that bill.

Jesse,

Just head South to Wasilla. You have a Sportsmans Warehouse there now and I would bet there is duck boat paint in stock. If not you can usually find the Krylon Rattle Cans in Camo with the fusion built in too. Good Luck

Now that paint stores can match ANY color, what is so special about "duckboat" paint?

If necessary look for a paint store that has a "scanner" that matches colors. Then what system do you want to use? If you are hyper about the quality of your job go with an automotive epoxy primer for your first coat. You won't be able to go over it "wet" without scuffing, but you can certainly let it cure, scuff & then use any color combination in a quality flat oil. For a trailored boat flat Rustoleum would be fine. If black or rust color is not enough for you, a paint store should be able to add color to Rustoleum flat white to get you close to any color you would like.

Also, there is no shortage of boats in Alaska. You must have marine paint stores. Any marine system, designed for boats that are wet stored will be more than sufficient for a trailored duck boat.

Jesse lives a one day drive from any real marine or auto paint store so at $4.50 a gallon for gas that becomes real expensive paint. Anchorage has some marine stores but anything other than pretty party boat paint has to be special ordered months in advance. Ditzler is an option but he works outside so it might be too cold already to cure well. He was way too busy fishing this summer with his grandson and visitors from Iowa to paint the boat anyway.

I thank all for the help. It seemed best to try to have a dot of the marsh brown paint scanned and matched at my closest (55 miles) paint store. I drove down after work tonight and explained my problem to the paint expert there. He suggested that the best paint I could get for the little aluminum skiff (short of going buying expensive marine paint) was "Rustoleum", and he suggested using the rattle cans in camo colors. He said it adheres better than latex or polyester and is more water resistant; said to put on two coats of primer and two of color. He said that once I get the hang of it I can spray two cans at the same time to get a blend of the colors. So I bought an armful of cans and will start the aluminum cleaning process this week. First will go on the Rustoleum metal primer, then the color. Think I'll make up some cardboard stensils for the grass and brush effect. Worst case scenario is I have to paint it again next year

We'll see how it comes out and holds up.

Jesse:

Use self etching primer for aluminum - not plain old Rustoleum primer. You can get it at most auto parts stores. The brand I used was Duplicolor and it is a spray can. It comes in a flat green color. Mine has held up well.

Hi Jesse,
Looks like you've made some good decisions on the paint. My rep for the best rate on shipping (he searches all sources for me) just got back to me and shipping on the 4 gallons would be around $400.......ouch. It costs bunches to get anything up to Alaska but....you already know that.
UPS & FedEx won't touch it since it has to go by air and USPS won't touch it due to the flash point thingy.
Have a great season.
Lou

Thanks for the effort and research Lou. Yea, the shipping is a bit much, but like you mentioned, getting anything up here from down there is expensive. If I had only known I'de be doing this I would have asked HuntinDave to bring it up with him on his visit early this summer. Sure had a blast with him. Any of you guys that are coming up this way, get in touch, we'll have some fun!
Jesse
