Duck Hunters...Irresponsible Piggish Slobs?

Reminds me of years ago when hunting LacLaParle in western Minnesota, the hulls were ankle deep in all the blinds. I scored so many once fired 10 ga hulls after the first year I never bought another factory box ever. It is nasty though some of the people out there are really pigs.

Breaking it all the way down . . .

Since decent human beings don't leave messes, all one ever sees is the evidence of slobs and thus deduces that all hunters are slobs. Good behavior is hard to notice / observe!

That being said, yes, I think most human beings are slobs whether they hunt or not.

That sums it up about as good as can be done.

John...I'll be in touch with you about the next meeting. I did just get the NWPADH newsletter yesterday, and of course it reiterates everything that I mentioned in my initial post. The next meeting is April 7 at the Yacht Club...I know you said you work 2nd shift, but if there is any possible way that you can make it I would definitely try to do so. I just talked with Mr. Tarasovitch (The Pres.) last night and he is also up in arms about the situation at PI, as are some of the Rangers.

Changes are imminent...please do your best to make the meeting as this is surely going to be a hot topic.

By the way, the club is dying to have some active members actually show up for a meeting. Even the directors rarely show up from what I have heard. Sounds like its time to become active...I'm rallying all the troops I can. I'll be in touch well before the meeting.

Each blind owner is responsible for his/her own blind. They all have two weeks from the close of the season (this Saturday) to remove their blinds. If they don't have their blind down within the allotted time they get blackballed and fined.

I'll be in touch, but mark April 7 on your calendar. I hope you can make it, bring along your ideas/suggestions. I have a few that I plan to run by the Association myself. We can get together and compare notes over coffee sometime before then if you'd like.

Steve

Steve;
I don't hunt from the blinds anymore, too many skybusters. No one lets the birds work.
Anyway, I'll try to make the meeting, I just read the newsletter last night.

[/font]I hear ya Bruce...I really don't like hunting down there myself, but I still do when my time is limited or the NW Zone is closed. It seems like I always walk away with a bitter taste in my mouth...skybusters are usually the main culprit. They drive me absolutely nuts. That and there are WAAAY too many blinds down there. I have some ideas that I plan to bring in front of the association at the next meeting that will hopefully address these issues. I doubt if it will fix the issues completely, but it is a start. I'd love to see ya down there with your own ideas and suggestions. The squeaky wheel gets the grease ya know.

The same offer stands for you and anybody else on here interested in seeing things change down there...lets get together and hash out some of our ideas over coffee before the meeting. If I don't see ya before the meeting I'll send you a friendly reminder via PM beforehand.

Steve

Hi Bruce,
I don't hunt the blinds very often but am concerned what would happen on the rest of the bay if the park was closed to hunting. Hope to see ya at the meeting or before.
I'll wear my Erie Bearings hat, John

Great Darin...I'm sure I'll be in touch before then too.

Tried to squeeze out one last hunt in the LE Zone today...no such luck, I started breaking ice, but it would have just been a slushy mess when I was finished and it would have refroze in about 20 minutes anyway. Oh well, there's still Moraine I suppose.

Steve

I checked a guy hunting behind the ranger station on Thursday. He was frozen and was picking up his balls of ice that used to be decoys. It was brutal out there. There were two guys hunting in the channel to horseshoe pond who were doing pretty good. Friday everything along shore was frozen. There is still a bunch of birds there, just no way to get to them.

If you decide to try Moraine let me know. If I can swing it I'll go with you.

Steve;
I'd be happy to get together during the next couple months, not much going on.
Saturday or Sunday mornings would work for me, with a little advance notice.
Thanks
Bruce

John;
I'm with you on what could happen if they closed the park.
Hopefully, some new ideas can be hatched.
Glad to know you will have your EBC hat on!!!
Thanks
Bruce

I'm going to chime in one more time, and say. Maybe it's not that there are More SLOBS, but since places to hunt are getting less and less, from what I remember in the 60's & 70's. Things just seem to be worse, because they are less spread out. Many, many of the places I would hunt waterfowl, and other game are Off Limits now. Especially the old strip mines, that were Sweet Honey holes (where I shot my first drake Can when they reopened the season for them and Redheads in 1976) that are now ringed with big homes.

You had more private property to hunt just for asking, and maybe a Brown Bottle. You kept it clean and minded your manners. Public areas were hunted much less frequently. Now public areas see much more pressure. So we all have to mind our P's and Q's.

I hunted Presque Isle in the 70's, when I was at Edinboro State college. The corn stalk blinds on the sidewalks were a hoot. Piano boxes everywhere...... I thought "So this is Great Lake Huntin' - OK".

Great Bruce...I'll try and plan a day we can all get together and discuss this before the April Meeting. I'd like to get together before the end of January if at all possible. That way the hunting season is still fresh in our minds. I will be in touch with all of you.

Vince...Did you graduate from EUP? I graduated from there in 2007, of course it's Edinboro University now. My daughter is attending there now too. Anyway, there seems to be waterfowlers on every little pothole or body of water in this county. It's really tough to find a nice little gem for yourself. Even with PI taking some of the pressure of the inland spots.

I didn't do my student teaching (because I hunted Waterfowl so much), no I did not graduate. At the time teachers made 6 - 7 grand a year, guys in the Steel Mill made double, and triple that. Plus they could HUNT. So.......... No regrets, and life is good. When I drive thru there now, I can't believe how built up the area is. No fast food when I was there. just Onarodo's, the Hotel, and Diner.

Enjoyed my time there, especially after I was accepted as a art major. Fantastic art program, and profs were world class artists. Incredible teachers that always pushed the envelope, and their students.

My buddies and I would hunt or fish almost everyday, and Woodcock dam was new. Pymatuning not to far away. I even have a photo of the "PA Game Commission Waterfowl Farm" barn, at Geneva, from back then.

Sounds like you have a good family tradition going, and I wish your daughter all the best. My years at Edinboro, prepared me for the SNOW of western NY.

Steve,

Sorry to hear the slobs have taken over that hunting area. Hope your wife realizes those are not real duck hunters. But things like that are hard enough to see for us old dogs...she must have been pretty disgusted. One of my favorite spots in Washington State, a resort on the lake organizes a cleanup once a year to pick up after the slobs who can't do it for themselves. I have seen mountains of refuse, literally almost too much for a big bow rider to carry out. Maybe your organization can organize something similar after the season? Maybe a little publicity would shame the slobs--and let the rest of the public know what real duck hunters think about crap like that.

Vince...Edinboro will definitely prep anybody for living in snowy conditions. That's the heart of the snow belt around here.

Bill, you sir may be on to something there. I may end upo contacting one of the local sports writers to see if he can put something besides himself in the paper for a change, good idea.
