duck stamp story

"The federal stamps have always, as far as I can remember, had 'Void after June 30, xxxx'..."
Heh heh...it just requires a magnifying glass for me to read it anymore.
Our migratory bird license is separate from our general hunting/fishing license so I don't normally carry the waterfowl license until the season opens. Bad idea. Some time between purchasing a stamp and the night before the opener, the unaffixed stamp and license had parted ways. I enjoyed the reality TV experience of visiting two Wal-Marts in two towns between 3:30 and 5 AM en route to my hunting spot. They couldn't find the stamps at the first and the sporting goods counter didn't open until 7:00 at the second. I patiently waited for a small town post office to open 10 miles from my destination. I guess my intention was obvious; the postal clerk pulled out his stack of duck stamps as I walked up to the counter.
Next year my waterfowl license will accompany me when I go to purchase a stamp so I can slap that bugger directly on the license. Sheesh.

I've never had a problem getting mine from the local post office, but when I get the chance I buy direct from a wildlife refuge. I've never understood why they're sold through post offices. Why not distribute them for the states to sell when they sell state licenses? I like one-stop shopping.

The trend is heading that way. Nearly every store here that is a state license vendor also offers duck stamps. The problem seems to be the number they have available is pretty variable.

Cool!
I think I'll try it now. The real test is....would they allow me to use it with my signature across the front.

Brent,

Every stamp I have used has had my signature across the stamp. I guess it depends on the clerk at your local post office whether or not they pick up on it.

I buy mine from Academy or Bass Pro. No sense in even trying the post office.....

Concerning the issue of signing the Stamp, I have been to some Federal Refuges that show the Stamp must be signed across the face of the Stamp and not on the edge of the Stamp. Give me a break!
A signature anywhere on the Stamp should suffice.

Could you imagine a Deer Hunting Stamp, or a Golf Stamp? Talk about money makers...

All good stories.

Two things in my regard for duck stamps...

First off, for the last ten or so years I've asked at my local Wal Mart, if they don't, Gander Mountain has always had them. (I prefer Gander Mtn., but always seem to end up in a Wally World when I need one).

Then, one time AT my local Wally World, I had a young, unknowing clerk hand me a whole book of them, then asked for my $15.00. IF I was dishonest, I would have had a very wealthy Duck Season...
