Duckboat hull repair process...

The crack below was a result of running into a sharp submerged object. The crack developed on the inside of the hull and to a depth of ½ to ¾ the plywood thickness.

This is the method I used to repair the hull.

I routed out a rectangular area ½ the plywood thickness that extended past the crack by approximately 1.5” in all directions. I then chiseled out any area in the crack, to sound plywood, that was deeper than the routed cut.

The chiseled area was then filled with “peanut butter” thickened epoxy.

I then made a plug that was larger then the routed rectangle by about 3” in each direction.

The plug was then glued and clamped using “ketchup” thickened epoxy.

The repaired section overlap was about 1/8” higher than the hull interior so I used “peanut butter” thickened epoxy to make a smooth transition.

This repair method was a combination of suggestions from several of the guys from this site as well as my own ingenuity. I appreciate your suggestions and I hope somebody finds this useful in there boat repairs.

Joe,

It looks great. And thanks for the repair tutorial. That's really helpful.

Seeing the damage when you were at the boat gathering in June made me second guess the wisdom of glueing the floor into my boat. If I ever had impact like yours, I wouldn't even know if the boat was damaged because it wouldn't show from the outside.

Joe, Atta boy, nice job. Just getting started was the hard part wasn't it? I speak from sad experience but they really are eaasy to repair. ALSO- Having built the boat makes it a lot eaasier to fix doesn't it? Nice fix!!

Thanks guys.

Tom, your right the hardest part on any of these projects is to start them. Once you get going the process consumes you and you remember how much you enjoy "messing about with boats".
