Fellow member from the UK Paul Scott arrived in Ellensburg Thurs evening for a few days on the water and around the state.

After getting all set with licenses and such we headed out for a late afternoon hunt to target Cans and redheads , finally after 4 weeks of not many birds around and a 300 mile road trip on Thursday we were able to get in on some birds for our first afternoon hunt.

Paul with the results of our first hunt, The weather was pretty mild so after putting out a jerk cord the birds wanted to work a little better with some ripples on the water.

.

We had Jarhead the traveling decoy out while we were hunting, I hooked him up with a carved can by Bob Jobes for company. We kept the pair off to the right so no stray shot would damage them.

Today we had good wind and lots of birds working the area we hunted, Paul is use to shooting anything that says "DUCK" on it because that's the way they do it in England. We got picky today and let lots of Ringnecks, dirty lessor Scaup, dirty cans and most anything that was brown (read, hen) escape our wrath, we ended up the day with a nice bag of Cans, Redheads a couple Ringnecks and Pauls prized Goldeneye. We also met fellow member Brad Harshman while out today.

So far Paul has been able to take 6 different species, tomorrow we, (and Jarhead) are headed west to the salt water for several days of sea ducks.

Paul has some great stories as a game keeper in England and his years spent as a gun loader on driven pheasant shoots, he has loaded guns for former world leaders and US military commanders, these first two days have been great, we have several more days planned out on the water, I can't wait for some more stories!

So it finally happened. I can remember reading what Paul had to say about his trip to the west coast and hunts with you, Fred. Heck, the scenery is absolutely breath taking and that would have made my day in a heart beat. I enjoyed seeing those pictures with what Paul was able to take. That is great!
By the way, that is an impressive group of diver decoys you had out there.
Enjoyed this thread!

OK, I am officially green with envy. Looks like you and Paul are having a great time. Going to be a few more nice pictures and stories for Jarheads journal. Come to think of it I am mostly envious of Jarhead. He gets to go on all the cool hunts!

Thanks for sharing some nice photos.

Great hunt guys! That is an impressively realistic looking rig on lines - nice setup.

Good luck on the salt!

That's awesome! Welcome to the states Paul. Hope you guys get some good shooting on the sea ducks. Good luck and be safe.

Steve

Fred, Are you and Paul around next weekend? Looks like Jarhead is holding up well for the grand hunt. You've got me jealous too.

Thank you guys, it really is amazing the number of species you can see with in a few minutes. I hunted with Fred and freds son hunter on Saturday, a nicer couple of chaps you could not meet. They made me laugh cos they are so used to seeing different birds, in comes a bird and this Englishman is screaming inside with joy and excitement " a goldeneye, a bluebill, a redhead!!! And these guys just look up , look down the river with the binos and say yer a goldeneye or bluebill, but don't shoot cos their "dirty or don't bother with that one as we can do better, and heck we did...

Fred has this great way of understating some amazing hunting stories " things like" o yer I packed in 100,0000 miles whilst carrying a horse or 3 and shot that big horn sheep" he almost wispers the story like he is reading the electrical bill the words come out, float into my thick head, i say o that must have been niceanThem 10 minutes later alarm bells start going off in my head, the ear defenders come off and I turn to him and say you did/ shot what!! Then the story gets more enlightened. Photos are shown or taxidermy mounts, Freds house is like a natural history museum, think I have died and gone to hunting heaven..:-)
Heck I am one lucky chap, we are having a blast on to the salt today,

Funny, just the other day I was noticing that I haven't seen a post from you in a while. Began wondering if something had happened to you. I enjoy your UK perspective on America's hunting adventures. But low and behold your in the thick of it over here. Not only that but you got somes cans that I've never gotten.....DANG! Oh well, I keep figuring one of these days I'll be in the right place at the right time. Hope you're enjoying your visit/hunting. Would like to hear/see some of your duck hunting exploits in the UK.

wow!! thats some nice mountains in the background,
looks like a great day for ducks too.
Congrats.
Who carved the bluebill decoy in the first photo? a real beauty.

Fred
Glad to see Paul traveled so far for some good shooting. The cost that made a hole in his pocket to get their will most likely be forgotten.

Paul and I made it back from the salt late last night, we had a great 2 days out on the water, the first day was real rough and windy, yesterday was better with rain but not much wind, I didn't get many pictures due to the weather but Paul was able to bag a Harlequin, Surf Scoters and a merganzer.

Here is the first day out heading to a new spot after the wind picked up, it's hard to tell but the wind waves were pretty big, with chop on top.

Paul with his Harli .Needless to say he was one happy camper!! The bird looks a little rough in the picture but it was a nice fully mature drake, rain just doesn't make for good pictures!!

We had a good trip even with the tough weather conditions, we are regrouping today then back at it for 5 more days before Paul heads home on Tuesday.

Fred,

The choppy conditions show up just fine in that first picture. Good thing you have the boats and skills to handle them. Congrats on another fine hunt. I enjoyed the "crappy" pictures. :>) :>) Thanks for sharing them.

Good on you Fred! Looks like Paul picked the right host. You've made some memories he will have for a very long time. Great pictures and story. I'm very envious.

hello guys, it really was an amazing trip. As Fred said the weather was rough, but heck I come from England bad weather is our middle name, the Inuits have so many words for snow we have the same for rain.... Spent most of last night thinking about about how to mount my Harlequin.. Any body got any photos they want to share. All the best to you all, Scotty
