Dust collection for power carvers...

I'm back into the phase of carving using the foredom, thanks to Mike (LI-Mike) for the push. My garage is finally available for carving and for the most part I wear a respirator while carving. I've been using a 12 gal wet/dry vac to clean up the dust but it's everywhere. The respirator works great when properly fitted, but when I walk into the house I'm covered with dust.

Does anyone have some recommendations on dust collection that has a reasonable cost for a small workshop?

yea take the blower out of one of those big white boxes in your garage and vent it out side What are those big white boxes for anyway.I thought it was a good idea.

What was Mike Braun using in his Oldsquaw tutorial? There was a funnel in his lap while carving the head...........Kevin

in lap dust collector----guy goes to westlake and to ocean city with the units--they are pretty efficient---have had one forever
you may try a google to find it

That's not my stuff, my wife uses them every once in a while. I think she'd notice if I took the blower out of the one she calls the dryer :0)

Any pictures? A funnel hooked up to a lap dust collector, pretty straight forward any favorite brand?

I did some google searches for portable dust collectors, there was one from delta but don't know if it'll hold up. The other thing about the dust collector is the 30 micron - 5 micron -1 micron bag issue, but that's another question probably based on Hp rate.

Jack,
How much dust are you kicking up? Put a box fan in your window with a sheet to collect the dust on the outside. I'll also look to see what I can dig up at work.

Sorry, the dryer thingy and box fan thingy just don't cut it, not enough volume. Dust collection is one of those things where you don't want to just wing it. Get a decent one even if it's before you get a bandsaw. Cork and cedar dust is TOXIC, not to mention the fact that teeny tiny particulate matter can gum up yer lungs and cause all sorts of mayhem, maybe not tomorrow, but for sure sometime in the future. If you walk into the house with the dust, you're exposing your family to the same....

Terry, I wasn't thinking about the toxins in the materials, and the box fan and volume didn't hit till after I posted.

I have this one, http://www.pennstateind.com/store/DC3-1M.html and some cheap duct work from home depot to make a lap mount. It doesn't get everything, but as I have shown here before I carve in my third bedroom and dust doesn't makes it way into the house. I have also found wearing a leather apron helps a bit and then I shed my dusty clothes before I leave the room.

MLBOB has a nice reference. Above is another one, but a bit different.

I have a Harbor Freight special 2hp one with a 1 micron bag (after market) and I have a pipe running up to a hole in a counter top I have mounted at table height. I then made a plexiglass box similar to Stef's, but I put a front on it with a piece of plexi 1/3 of the way down, then heavy plastic strips hang the rest of the way. Think freezer sections at grocery stores or coolers. Anyhow, keeps 95% of the heavy particles under the hood, and damn near all the dust. I can run a foredom at full speed and the dust/chips will not hit the front, they just suck straight down into the hole.
