East Coast Trip - Pictures Added

It's been a while since I posted last, but Canvas and I have been here. This Wisconsin season was fair. Not the numbers I was hoping for, but fun nonetheless. This was Canvas's first year hunting (she is 18 months old). Many things to continue working on with her, but she enjoyed getting my ducks. She had somewhere around 140 waterfowl retrieves and she's figuring out the crippled diver game. I have many pictures from the season that I will post at a later date.

We didn't get to layout hunt near as much as I had wished - weather was a very limiting factor this season.

This is a picture from a trip this spring:

This year my season won't finish with the Wisconsin close. I'm planning a two week freelancing trip over Christmas - just me and the pup. I'll be departing 12/25. :

My original plan was to start in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay for seaducks. As I was online buying my license, I became aware that a Maryland resident is required in the boat - Put a major kink in my plans. I was planning on doing one day guided, but without the freelancing portion, I am not going to Maryland.

My second destination was intended to be Maine - but it looks like I'll be heading straight there instead. Their grouse and snowshoe seasons are open through December - so I'll spend a good chunk of my first week doing the upland thing. My second week (and probably a few days during the first week) I plan to chase eiders. I'm towing an enclosed trailer where I will spend a few of the nights. Inside the trailer I'll bring my Avon. She's a 16ft SIB and should do just fine on the coastal waters. With one man, I won't be layout hunting - but should get some shooting from the grey boat. I just rebuilt the plywood floor inside the boat and tested it last night. I don't have experience in SIBs, but thus far I'm very impressed with the handling and stability. It's rated for 10 people and a 65hp motor. If anyone is in the coastal maine area and would like to join up for a hunt, shoot me a PM. I should have room for another guy in the Avon.

I am contemplating stopping in New York a day or two to hunt either Erie or Ontario....those shorelines make it quite wind dependant, so I'm not confident in those plans yet. Not knowing those areas I'll need to spend a day or two scouting first.

I hope to have some pictures to share after the trip-

That sounds like a great time, Paul. Drive safely and hopefully you'll record this trip with many images. I'll look forward to hearing all about your adventure. Good luck.

Paul,

what parts of the state are you headed to? I might be able to provide some intel on the eider scene. Either way, have fun.

John - the boat is an all glass wigeon - MLB. It's my go-to boat for solo hunting in most cases.

Al - I'll be sure to post pics from the trip.

Troy - I'll shoot you a PM.

Hey Eric - I've used the 2 man on a few occasions. (Eric sold me a duck wrangler 2 man all glass layout boat). I love that boat. Great for two guys or one guy and a dog on calm waters. I have not yet built a spray skirt for it - but when I do she will be more versatile. I've usually stacked decoy bags on the bow to break waves and put the weight in the back when motoring. She does OK like that, but you wouldn't want to get caught in anything too rough!

Afternoon Gentlemen,

I arrived home late last week from my east coast trip. Below are some photos from the trip. Enjoy-

Couldn't resist stopping at LL Bean:

We spent Sunday (no hunting in Maine) walking the beach for buoys:

I prepped the boat for launching:

This was a tidal flat we hunted the first day - Canvas blended in pretty well.

A successful freelancing trip, I'd say. Takes a lot to put it all together and birds on the water in a new area. Glad it went to well!

Looks like you had a great time.
First time I have a seen some use an inflatible to hunt waterfowl, looks like it works well for that area and what you had planned.

Paul--Looks like a great trip. Did you get any partridge and bunny hunting in?

What part of the coast were you hunting?

With the seaweed over that low gray boat, I bet you COULD use it as a layout. Looks like a chunk of granite with some rockweed attached.

nice pics that looks like an awesome trip

i guess i dont have to ask if there is enough ice for smelt fishing
