Eider Hunting

We are looking at setting up for Eiders basically within eyesight of where we are launching. If the weather is calm and no bad weather predicted then we may travel within a few Km's of the launch site but not far as I am unfamillar with that area. I will be marking the launch point with my GPS and leaving it on so it will mark our route in case the fog becomes an issue. My buddy is bringing his GPS for a back up as well and ofcoures I have my compass if need be. We're even planning on bring a 2 Hp as a back up incase my 25 Hp quits. We have a back up hunting plan if the weather is too bad to go on the salt water we will hunt a marsh/river area that is about a half hour away. Never been sea duck hunting before so we'll try to error on the side of caution.

Hey Bill,

Good luck with the hunt. Sea ducks are a lot of fun to hunt and are one my of favorites. One thing I would suggest, bring a good map of the area with you and try and mark way ponts on your way to the spot. Once you get to the spot you are hunting, look at the map again and try to visually back track your way to the ramp or place you put in. That will really help you in terms of navigating to the spot the next time and you will be able to see markers, islands, ledges, sand bars, etc., that will assist you. Plus, if you ever get in a jam in the fog or if your GPS quits you should be able to navigate relatively well with the compass and map. Remember to count of minutes from one point to another on the way back to the ramp. Keep a notebook with notes and coordinates.
