Eiders

While we have only done two Sea Duck trips so far this season, we are still out fishing daily for Striped Bass. It's blowing a gale out of the Northeast today here in Montauk but I've never seen this amount of Eiders around. No matter where we fished it was a steady stream of them past the boat all morning. I actually think there is more Eiders here right now than Scoters. As the fishing season winds down and our gunning season picks up I'll be able to give a more accurate report on what is happening here. I sure hope they hang around here all winter. It'll be fun.

My parents were sailing down by you on their way to Bermuda a couple of weeks ago.
My father teels me he's never seen so many Eider as you had there. Considering he's
from Maine that's saying something!

WOW! That is saying something. Its deffinetly the most I've ever seen. Good sailing to your Mom and Dad. That's quite an adventure. One of my customers, whom I sure has passed away by now, won the Newport to Bermuda race twice on a Sloop built in Maine. I've always said that "People who know how to sail are usually impressive people and people that have sailboats and don't are usually A-Holes". Good luck once again to them.

They are having FUN!

At 68 and 65 years young, they have just retired and are taking thier dream trip.
Hell, I'm proud of them for just doing it.

There is a ton of birds here now. Yesterday we had a Fishing Charter out We limited out on Strippers to 30 pounds for the group of 5 Limited out with Blackfish at Southwest Ledge. Nice fish they averaged about 5 pounds. But the Scoters steamming west were incredible a never ending fight from daybreak till we hit the Inlet at 3:00. Had to cancell my trip for today because of the NW Gale. I hitched up the boat and headed for the North Fork where I could get a good lea. I never even lanched. There wasnt a bird to be seen. Drove home and did the whole tour. Stopped at Shinnicock Inlet , Tons of Scoter and Eider in the ocean, drove to the South Ferry betwwen Shelter Island and North Haven, only a handful of Old Squaw. Tomorrow I'll try to gun Montauk before my afternoon trip.

Jack,

you sent one south to us. 1 hen eider. We ended up with 4 GWT and 16 scoters. Did not see any white wings. Any your way?

Phil

Thats a good Shoot, Green winged teal (GWT)? Ive killed a lot of other birds out cootin Geese, Brant, Broadbill , Buffelheads, Black Ducks but I dont think I've ever seen a Green Wing out there. Plenty of White wings here in Montauk and Gardners. Limited out on Bass this afernoon fro a party of 6, Nice fish too, Bassing is holding up well. Going Codfishing tomorrow
