Electronic purchase of hunting and fishing licenses

Minnesota now allows electronic purchases of hunting and fishing licenses. Cool. Now if I can just keep my license on my phone rather than carrying a piece of paper around with me, that would be a very nice feature. For me it would be, maybe not everyone.

Mark, I think that is about 5 years away...but coming.... I agree that would be a nice OPTION, or a back up. About 5 years ago, I lost my license and had to buy a replacement. What a joke. Just another way to make more money, I had the reciept and everything, but because I did not have the phyiscal license and federal stamp I as SOL.

Me I will always have a slip of paper as soon as I can print it out. Phones die, get left behind or lost. I print out 3 or 4 copies and put spares in my tackle bags. Maybe having both would be a little easier to find, but looking through a bunch of emails is no quicker then going through my wallet.

It has always surprised me how few Minnesotans use the internet licensing option. In the past 6 or 7 years I have consistently been fishing in MN I have bought all my licenses over the internet and printed them out myself. In that time I have not met a resident that used it, heck I have had CO's check me and sound a little surprised that it was an internet license.

I've done on-line licensing for years in Wisconsin and just about every state I have hunted in. Like Tim, I always print out a paper copy just in case. My feeling is that if I lost my license at least the CO would be able to look it up on his computer (I have my customer number memorized). Pretty handy the night before some opener when you realized you forgot to get a license.

In Alabama, its all online.
Even if you go to a vendor, they enter the information online and then print it out.
You also get a copy emailed to you so you can print out extras.

Maine too. I print 5 copies at first--one in the truck glove box, one in the "boat box" in each boat, one in my fishing vest, and one in my wallet. Anytime I'm hunting or fishing it's a pretty good bet I'll have at least two copies with me.

Due to logisitics across barren waste land Alaska has had online license and permits for several years now. I only recently started using the online license part but have been using the online permits for years.

Up here the license you get is still a hard paper version that matches the color for the year. They cycle between green, yellow, blue and white. The vendor sales books match what you get in the mail. This makes it easier for the Troopers to visually check if you have the right years license. They do not send you a PDF version to print out, but you do end up with an email that states you have a temporary license that you can use as proof before they mail out the paper version. Also using an online system makes it easier to replace one if lost. The mailed license is a different shape and everything is printed rather than hand written squiggles on carbon paper like the vendor book versions. Much nicer thing to have on hand.

The drawing permits are still mailed out hard copy in a weird orange cardstock. The online permits are printed on what ever you have handy but are nearly twice the size of mailed versions. Thats a pain but they still fit in a quart zip lock easy enough.

For multiple permits like black bear and deer you have to make sure you notch/use permit #1 first and then on down the order. If don't use permit #1 first and get checked by a Trooper they can bust you for some minor violation about tag use.

Missouri is going to an online only service instead of over the counter. They also will be charging a convienance fee for doing it online
