epoxy and cloth questions....

Hey Dave, good luck on the DS15. Let us know how that plywood works out, the birch I've used is stiff, but tough.

So, what sort of birds do you hunt in MT? Huns? Sharptails?

We hunt mainly pheasant, but always put up sharptails and occasionaly huns depending the area. We jump shoot ducks as we work the waterfowl production areas for pheasants. It is not uncommon to have three or four spieces at the end of the day. Way better hunting than the Dakotas, IA, KS or NE. I've hunted all of them. Been stuck on MT the last four years. I'll be in Reading, PA next week for a Trackfest conducted by the United Blood Trackers organzation with the same dogs that I bird hunt with.

Me neither. Look at all we have in common.

Well I don't know about that! Teaching at SW Conn? That is way to liberal for me! So what kind of birch did you use and what did you make?

No, Fairfield U. Thanks for mentioning liberal, that reminds me I need to get out my sandals to wear to work this week now that it is warm.

On the birch ply I had a 1/2 sheet that I used on a couple of ill-fated jigs to try to make laminated bent cockpit cover frames. I never did make the curved frames, but in working with the plywood it was stiffer than I expected.

Yea! I expect I might have to score the sheets in places for curves and then fill them with epoxy. Should be a pretty sturdy boat with a birch hull and Biax inside and out.

Ok guys I am confused. To epoxy the inside or not to epoxy the inside -- that, at least, is my question. I am restoring a 1920's or older 12' double-ender. The wood appears to be planed cedar, 1/4" thick. I am planning to use 3 oz cloth on the outside (boat weights about 70 lbs originally). Does the wood need to "breathe?" Or do I just encapsulate the inside with a couple of coats of epoxy for durability. What is the rule of thumb?

If it were Oukome, it appears routine to epoxy the inside. Don't want to start a scrap, but could use some guidance. thks /cc

I've only built one boat so I'm a novice here. Cedar is fairly rot restistant. For me the decision would be based on its present condition. Is the wood completely dry? What is the humidity in your location? In northern WI, we have very little humidity in the winter and moisture is sucked out of wood. If the wood is dry I would epoxy the inside. Last year I built a fold down dog ladder which hooked on the grass rail. Dummy me - I built the platform out of slatted cedar and sealed it with Minwax wood sealer which is a resin thinned with acetone and paint. The idea was good, but the cedar floated like a cork and the platform would not stay down with out 10 pounds of weight on it.

Ed,

I went with MAS epoxy and 6oz cloth for my build.

I went with MAS for no other reason than that's what was suggested to me from the person I got most of my supplies from. I'd use MAS again but wouldn't hesitate to use the other brands you have listed if the price was right.
