Evolution of my carving vise

Andrew,

With all those orders and potential orders for a vice.....early retirement? new boat? quit your day job? Hire Dave as a consultant?

It is a sweet looking vice and so is Dave's

Clever ideas guys. Making your own fixtures and tooling adds a lot of satisfaction to any project you work on. Have you thought about alleviating the neeed for wrenches to make adjustments? Wherever possible I like to use cranks and knobs to keep me from digging out wrenches. The below link is one source for adjustable handles. By adjustable it means you can pull the handle outward and rotate to any position so that the handles can be used to tighten and loosen in areas that won't allow them fully revolve.

Perhaps even better, in Andrew's case, would be to tap the aluminum and use a handle similar to the above but that has a stud with threads to match the tapped holes. No more nuts and bolts to fall on the floor. It looks like Dave tapped his plate so all he would need to do is subsitute a bolt with an adjustable studded handle.

Andrew,

Heck this will be like a pyramid scheme.....we each contribute an idea like Eric just did (which was a good idea) and then get people under you with ranking by when the the idea was dated.....and sell each other vices....you and Dave will be in South America for half the year hunting.....and retired.....the rest of use can support you.....I can see the promo.....Join Vice-Scamway Today....make millions like the others that have gone before you...nothing to buy but that vice you always dreamed of owning...umm something seems a tad out of kilter with that

That is a great idea Eric to use that handle...hate having to go get the right wrench or allen when I am busy...

Eric,

I had considered such a handle but hadn't gotten to the point of cost/benefit factoring yet. Mine is my first proto type and I'm sure there are many different mods that could or should be made.

I may make a few to give away but after 10 hours in a machine shop all day, I not sure I want to spend my spare time making vises. :>) :>)

Dave

You'd rather come home and get on the computer. Me, I'd rather head to the shop. Problem is I have homework that my kids keep bringing me. Can't wait for Summer when my evening aren't manipulated.

Eric,

I got a chuckle out of the homework thing.....with my kids grown and out of the house....I sort of miss the..."Dad, on problem 19 should I use the.....?" or "Dad when are we going to go ice fishing again....?"

I will NEVER miss the homework my kids bring home. NEVER. We didn't have anywhere near the amount of homework and projects they do.

I've used RAM mounts for electronics on my boat. They're great for that, but wouldn't have the gripping power to hold a carving while using any kind of pressure.
