Factory Decoy

Any help with confirming this old blue wing teal is appreciated. Was a recent gift from the wife of a hunting buddy that passed away. Has a sticker on the bottom (no lead or rigging hardware) that says "1875 Dodge Decoy Factory." Any books I can get that would have its history??

Hello Scott, Have you googled the what's written on the sticker, you may be pleasantly surprised!
All the Best, John

American Factory Decoys - by Fleckenstein, is just one book, there are more. Plus, Decoy Magazine back issues. J. N. Dodge Decoy Company 1884-1894-95, Detroit, Mich. Teal decoys are not common...

If the date on the Decoy is correct. It's a Peterson Decoy, 1873-1884. Even more uncommon in OP. You did very good.

John, I did a quick internet search but it appears that the date is before the company was in business? Not positive of the date or maker, that's why I'm looking for help with confirming. Thanks!!

Scott - Dodge bought out Peterson. That's why the similarity.

If you want to know more. Send photo's to one of the major auction houses. You will get a reply.

I agree with Mr. Sanford.

Hi Scott , I have no where near the authority on decoys ,that's why i mentioned to google the name , I came up with RGJ antiques which gives a brief write up, but more important Vince & Steve can definitely steer you in the right direction.

Scott: The book " Detroit Decoy Dynasty" by authors Ron Sharp and Bill Dodge (2009) has great information and many photos of Dodge factory decoys. The book is out of print, but available on ebay and Amazon. Check your local library for a copy.

Thanks Ken! I also took the advice of others and contacted an auction house. They asked for additional photos, so I hope they can identify it.

Got a confirmation that it is a Dodge teal, likely a hen as it does not appear there is a white crescent on the head. It is likely that the date is correct too. I was also told that a very similar picture is in the book Detroit Decoy Dynasty. Unfortunately this book is out of print, so I'll start searching libraries to find a copy of it. Thanks for the great recommendations here by all! This little girl will forever hold a place of honor in our home.
