Family fishing boat advice (NDR)

I'm in the family fishing boat market and stumbled on this rig today. The boat is about what I was thinking of size wise and it appears to have some nice extras. The asking price is $8,500 or bo and the motor will come with a one year warranty. I have no idea on boat values and with the extras listed I'm at a bit of a loss. Do you guys think this is a good asking price? Are there any issues I should look into with this era boat?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Joe,

On the surface the price seems reasonable IF: The boat has been stored inside, there are no loose or damaged rivets, no leaks in the live well system, the electical system seems to be in good condition. What happened to the original motor?

Have you seen it? How does the condition seem to you? Is a 50 hp going to be enough motor for you? What is the max motor for this boat according to the inspection plate? If the max is 125 hp for example, a 50 may not be enough. If max is 75 the 50 is likely just fine.

Beyond these questions I haven't been in the market for a boat for some time so I really don't know if the price is good or not. Check out the classifieds on Walleye Central as there are a lot of similar boats on there.

Here is one from there that is similar to what you're looking at.

Good Luck,

I have a 2006 Lund Alaskan w/ a 75 Merc. Perfect motor for the boat. I paid 16500 BMT new. The 50 may be a little light. Go to the Lund web site and see what the boat is rated for. The lunds are great boats.

I think that is a lot of money for that rig, maybe not a lot too much, but more than you need to pay. You could've had Bill Wasson's Alaskan 20 for less.

It is a nice looking boat, but I think it is overpriced -- unless it seems fair to you and then it is worth it.

Looks like it has a stainless prop on it...better jump on it ;) Really, it sounds a bit high for a 11 year old boat and (now) 3 year old motor. Like Pete asks, why the new motor? Does the owner let maint. go? If everything is in almost perfect shape it may be "worth" that much but getting it is a different story. You say "family boat"..do your kids want to ski or tube? A tiller won't work for that very well.If it's still for sale a month from now I bet you could get it for a lot less and will see a lot of other bargains when Christmas bills start coming in.

Thanks for the links and insight guys.

I talked with the boss last night and I think we're going to pass. I'd like to go to a few boat shows this winter and see what's out there. Does anybody know of any good boat shows around Wisconsin that are put on in the winter months? I'm also going to start a used boat folder so I can get a good benchmark on boat values in my region.
BTW I'd love an alaskan but I'm sure it would fall in the category of an "ugly" boat to my wife. She's raised her cosmetic standards since marrying me?

Thanks again,

Joe Lane

Joe,

I have a blue and silver alaskan 18, they come in red and silver too. (As well as a green and camo color.)

With a blind it makes a great diver boat. In the summer it makes a great tubing/family cruising etc boat.

My wife (politely) refused to go out in my old OD green starcraft v-hull in the summer (out of embarassment), but she gladly goes out in the alaskan. I wouldn't write it off if it is a boat you like. My wife loves ours.

I'm hoping to talk her into painting the hull open water grey (FME) one of these days. I think it might be subtle, good for ducks, and not wife threatening enough to work...

I like the fisherman and the explorer too, but I prefer the open floor of the alaskan, and the lack of as many unnecessary bells and whistles. If you are patient you can find a deal too (especially where you live - you live in Lund central).

"If you are patient you can find a deal too (especially where you live - you live in Lund central)."

Good advice from Charlie. The boat shows might help you decide what kind of setup you want, but if you wait until spring, you'll find all kinds of boats for sale. Sometimes it's best just to drive around some of the neighboring towns on weekends in April to see what guys have sitting by the roadside with a "for sale" sign on. Last year I couldn't believe how many boats were for sale, and I'd expect this coming spring to be the same way.

Joe,
Green Bay ahways has a huge on in the winter. Close to March I believe. If I remember, I will post up the info. Huge expo center and they take over, tons of makes/models.

that is a long 3 hr drive on 54 for the game, be safe.

Hey Joe....

Looked liek a good time.
