Family ice fishing day - Lake Leberge

Sunday was Family day put on by the Yukon Fish and Game Association so we headed out there. No one caught anything but one guy had sat out all night and hooked a bunch of burbot. This whopper was 37 inches long and 17lbs I think. It had 5 other burbot in its belly. This little girl was right in there. She told me she had never gone fishing and wondered why the fish was painted cammo.

I ended up working the barbq and it was really nice to get to talk to people who never get to do stuff like ice fish. Some tourists from Italy were out there and they couldn't believe the whole thing was free including moose smokies. Later in the afternoon when we were packing up, the guy with the fish cut them up and we cooked some on the grill in foil with a bit of butter. MMMMM! He sent all the fish home with anyone who wanted a bit.

Sounds like a great day to be on the ice.
I caught my first two burbot this winter at Mille Lacs in MN (called eelpout up there)....they were substantially smaller then that fish.

Mike:

Try Tanana River Lobster some time.

Get some crab / or lobster boil mix add a little brown sugar bring a good sized pot to a boil.
Add bite sized pieces of burbot, when they float to the top their done.
Drawn butter and down the hatch.

If you have never tried it Bob the magnificent will predict.. You will.
