February 2014 Workbench Thread

I am making a new holder for my business cards. I had been using the Canvasback I made a few years ago - but a good customer - a collector of that species - wanted one just like it - so I sold him the "original". This next one will be a Black Duck - but a Broadbill is in the works, too.

The slot is about 1/8 inch longer than a card. The "back wall" of the slot is beveled about 20 degrees,

I glued leather to the bottom of the Can but am trying canvas for the Black Duck.

On to varnish and paint - so I'll have it for the Long Island Decoy Collectors show this weekend.

All the best,

Gents ~

Glad you like them - it's certainly fun (and challenging) to carve something so small. Here's the Broadie-beak:

I have finished the Black Duck but the paint (oils) is still drying. (I used acrylics all the BB)

All the best,

Tan cork, basswood heads, Golden Heavy Body Matte acrylics on the bills and bodies, Ronan's oils on the heads...and time. The first five are slight variations on the same head pattern. The second five are an attempt to animate my rig a little more. Sorry for the "odd" posing and camera angles. Too cold (-12F), even in the garage, to put a nicer backdrop together and take more time on photos for these birds. Still have to keel them and apply two more coats of paints to the bases:

Steve - Love the business card holders. Very cool and, ingenious.

Rick - Love the redheads! The different head poses in your rig are stellar! When we were snow goose hunting, we were hunting over water in a flooded cornfield. What as cool is the duck show we got, was amazing! Just about every species. At one point, I took the Ranger to retrieve a couple of blues on the other side. Just as I was going back to the pit, a squadron of redheads came screaming into our floating decoys. Absolutely beautiful! Being in the pit with all puddle duck shooters, even they were impressed with the redhead show! Keep up the good work and, thank you for posting up your gunners. Pat

Pat, thanks for the compliment. Yes, redheads are one of my favorite waterfowl to watch as they work a spread.
