Those of you that used Kevlar on the hull of your boats. Do you have an feedback on the performance of it?

I did not use it on my BBIII but with the new project underway I am considering it.

Has anyone has a impact on the boat with the Kevlar? I am assuming damage is still substantial and that your still going to need to cut out wood and repair in that situation.

So lay it on me what have you guys found with it?

Brandon,

No experience with kevlar and all I know is hearsay so I won't comment but I'd really like to know what you are building.

Brandon,
The bottom of our original scaup is done in kevlar. It's a very hard cloth to cut. If you lay a piece of cloth out on some wood and try to cut it with a razor, you end up cutting the wood but not the cloth. I think we ended up using a pair of sharp, heavy duty shears. But it is very durable, just a harder cloth to work with compared to glass. I have hit a few rocks with the boat (not going too fast) and it has been fine. But we also have 3 oak keel and bilge guards with bronze half rounds, so that can go along way towards protecting the hull during normal beachings.

I have kevlar on the bottom of my sneak boat. I'm not hitting things under water at high speeds, it is all human power propulsion. It did come off the top of my roof rack one day (at about 60). I suppose you could count that as an impact. It was OK. None of the seams that were covered in kevlar came apart.

Abrasion is a bit of a problem. You cannot sand kevlar. It is what it is when it sets. I used a peel-ply to avoid any sanding. It worked well. One issue I have is the skuf point on the bow is a little messed up. I need to put some aluminum on the contact point or something. Fixing is not all that easy because sanding is just not a viable technique when dealing with it.

Pete,

If everything goes right, it just might be possible that Brandon could show up at LaCrosse with his project. It might be a push but it certainly is possible. I've been sworn to secrecy but a piece of warm pie might be my breaking point. :>) :>)

Dave we picked a gallon of wild blueberries a few days back and are working on raspberries now. Keep in mind a pie of wild berries always taste better then those farm raised one. Keep my secrete and I might bring one along.. haha!

Brandon,

Reminds me of picking fresh blueberries while in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota on a kayaking trip. I'll bet they make a delicous pie.

Brandon, I wrapped my bb3 with kevlar,It is very tuff stuff! I put i down first and came across the top of it with 6oz glass,it does not sand at all,It just balls up like a cheap sweater,if you have any questions feel free to call me,618-234-7693,Ill answer to the best of my knowledge, let me know Brian

know a guy who has an auminum boat with kevlar so he can run through ice without damaging the boat, even shot a .45 into it and no penetration. Very cool

Paul, thought oh boy, 30 posts and a ad, but with that post above... Welcome, that was funny. Sounds like "here hold my beer and watch this" for duck hunters. LOL love them 45's.
