Seeing that mussels are filter feeders and concentrate nasty things like heavy metals....wonder how concentrated that stuff is in the eiders?
Great photos....I have never seen a wild eider, so the pics are great....That is whats happens when you are living in the Intermountain West in the second driest state....no ocean based critters....
Nice pics. They jump right off the screen. Here is a pic of the contents of the crop of one of the Eiders Ira and I shot with you in December of 2008. Hard to imagine getting all those down without cutting their throats.
Damn, what do the gizzards in these things look like? 1/2 the body weight????
I love mussels, wish I had some to steam up right now! But they are really hard to find down here. We have to suffer with oysters and $2.50/lb large shrimp.
poor endangered mussels. Matt I suspect they don't have the problems with contaminants that you have on the GSL except in a few spots like NYC and Boston Harbor. But you are right it can be a problem.
Most the closed or 'contaminanted' shellfish areas around me here in RI are way in the north part of the bay. The eider seem to stay only in the open ocean, but still an interesting thought.
