Finally, a little success!

Folks, make no mistake about it this season has been bleak for us Vermonters. Very high water on Lake Champlain. Very warm temperatures and precious little corn that actually made it to the chopper. All this means VERY few prime waterfowling days. Yesterday, however, we had a little luck. We set up in a field where I spotted about 40 birds the day before. It was to be a "Father and son" hunt for a friend whose 13 year old son had never shot a goose. We had a few flocks look us over but few commit. The first flock of the morning came in on rails and then we failed to finish about 4 other flocks that would just look us over and saw the skunk. At one point someone asked "Everything in the spread is perfect. I wonder what it is that they don't like?" I answered from the birds perspective "It's probably those 4 fools down there in those coffin blinds!" Eventually, birds began funneling back from their alternate feeding grounds and we got a nice flock of about 50 birds circle us 3 times and finally, a 1/2 dz dropped in cupped and committed. We had birds hanging in front of our faces, not 10 yards in front of the kid. There could be no misses. It was a beautiful. Here's a shot of the Father & Son with 4 of the 5 birds taken. sure felt good to be seeing some results again!

Brad,
We hunted up in Highgate the first couple weekends of the goose season. There were lots of birds but they seemed pretty decoy shy. We took a few but nothing like in years past. I haven't hunted in a few weeks and don't expect to hunt geese again this season.
As for the high water, we sure don't see it this high during duck season very often. It gave me the opportunity to hunt flooded timber for the first time in my life.

Jeff,

how have you done hunting timber? We could all use a lesson from those Southern Boys these last two years. I hear it's best late morning on sunny days when they return from feeding?

Brad,
Mid afternoon seems to work best. We tried one morning hunt and saw absolutely nothing. In the afternoon just before dark things get real exciting.
