Finally done

Well, I promised someone a blackduck decoy about 2 yrs ago and it took a little longer than planned (don't tell me none of yall have ever done that). This was one of the better mallard/black heads I've carved and I just couldn't get the head to look right. Matter of fact, it was so bad, I showed it to him and he suggested I just make him a hybrid. I'll do it differently next time but it came out pretty neat. Solid cork, basswood head, oak keel.

Hey bud that is a neat looking bird.

Give me a call some time Im going to try to get up there for a couple more hunts this year. we need to go again.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I think it wold be neat to make about 3 more for myself... which works out well since I'm lazy and the body painting is so much faster than a mallard!

Willy - What I meant about doing it a little bit differently, I actually put quite a few of the "cream-colored" feathers in his head but lost them due to washes and dry brushing green. Most of the pictures I've seen of hybrids had a strong mallard look from the eye channel to crown and more of the blackduck coloring with green irridescence on the cheeks. I've killed two obvious drake hybrids and one had the faint white line around the back half of it's neck (I mounted that one) and one had a beautiful green head, similar to this coloring, but still had a little more blackduck look to it. I'm sure the ducks won't care and it's going to get hunted regularly.

Justin - great to hear! Post more pictures if it pans out.

Tim - Sounds good.
