First boat, a lot of questions! Updated 12/27

Just received my first boat, finally going to be able to duck hunt without hitching a ride!
I've been boating my whole life but mostly cuddy cabs and cruisers...so I'm kinda lost here.
I believe it's a late 40s Grumman, no way for me to be sure though just going by what info I was told.
It measures ~13'8"x4'1".
There are no date plates or markings. It looks really solid and sturdy, great overall condition. Whoever had it took care of it.
I have no idea what size motor to put on it though. My best guess would be a 9.9 or 10hp...maybe a 15?
Also looking for a trailer...but that's the easy part...

Grumman made a boat, starting in 1953 called the "Cartopper". It was 12' 4" long, and weighed 88#s. If this is a Grumman, it would be a fairly rare aluminum boat. They were rated for a 5 hp and were really tippy, because of the hull design. I think they started making canoes in 1946, and also made a small 8' tender dinghy called a Rhodes, that was also set up for a sail rig, as were the canoes and sport boat.

I just sold my sail rig, from my Sport Boat, to a fellow in Northern Wisconsin. He planned on picking it up a few weks ago, but we had an ice/snow storm that shut down schools and businesses for a day.

Are there any markings at all on the boat? What about a small plate on the front bulkhead, or deck?

And so another addiction begins! Congrats on a great little boat. Hope you have fun with it. 9.9 should do fine, but it is nice to have the extra power of a 15 when you want it. If you are looking at older motors, weight shouldn't be a concern between the two. I beleive they are both around 74lbs.
 
Nice boat! I would think a 9.9/15 2-stroke would push it very well. An 8 would probably be fine if you can fine one.
Are there any markings or serial numbers at all? The bow reminds me of a Starcraft design.
Send us some pics of the inside when you get her turned over.
I have a trailer for $200 if you want to drive to Alabama to pic it up. :)
 
I know for sure that it is not a Grumman "Cartopper", as the Cartopper did not have a front deck. How long s this boat. The transom brace and the handles on each end of the transom look very much like a, AlumaCraft. Either way, it's a nice boat.

If this is your first boat it's a GREAT boat. My first boat was a two man rubber raft I used to float the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, when I was a kid. Caught a lot of muskrats and coon, some mink to using that boat, and one day made a double, with one shot, on a mallard drake and hen I flushed while turning a bend.
Took that rubber raft to Wisconsin, when me moved here, and used it until I wore holes in the sides, where the aluminum oars rubbed.

I picked up a cedar strip canoe for $135.00 and used that for 7 years, when it was replaced with my Grumman Sport Boat, and an Evinrude 6 hp motor. Man I was living!!

Boat looks great and it looks like it's already painted a dark marsh green.

Measure the transom height to make sure you get the correct motor leg length. Either 15" or 20". Looks like that boat could take a 10 hp, or maybe even a 15.

Thanks... did some searches and I am positive it is an alumacraft. Not sure what model but I'm on the path. Just need a trailer and motor and I'll spend the spring fixing it up.
 
I have a 14' Lund and a 15 on it. While it is plenty fast for me if going solo, with 2 in the boat a 25 would be nice. Buddy has same Lund boat as mine and has a 25 Yammy on it. Much nicer set up than mine. Your boat looks lighter than mine so a 15 might push it fine.

I can get to about 19mph with just me and my stuff with the 15 horse.

If you are running on the coast, you will need to pick your days or get right with God. That hull is small for much wave action. I have hunted a few so called sheltered bays on the West Coast. The waves can build fast.
 
Yes! You do have an Aluma-Craft. I checked my 1956 Aluma-Craft catalog and you have a Model A, with the optional deck. The shelf under the front deck, was meant as a forward seat, small, but still a seat. With the optional deck added, the "seat" becomes a nice storage shelf. Send your email address to my email address, and I will send you color pics of your boat. The specs are: 14" long, 49" width amidships, 43" at the transom, weight 130", rated fora 12 hp motor.

Do NOT run a larger motor, as the transom will crack, and it will be dangerous, because of the motor weight and boat speed. My Grumman Sport Boat has a rating of 5 hp, and I run a 6 hp, and it runs fine, but at one time I tried a Chrysler 15 on it. The back of the boat really sagged in the water, and when I opened it up, the the Grumman jumped up on plane, and was running on about the back 6" of the boat pad. Way too scarey!!
