First Duck for a Young Hunter! - pics

A friend and I took a youth hunter out on Saturday here in Western NY for the youth hunt. The kid took out a tree branch that saved the life of a georgous drake woody!

He missed a couple more but finally connected with a black duck that winged down in some thick willows and logs. I marked it well and knew that it was going to take some work to find. Lily and I went on over and she worked her way in that mess. Bird was nowhere to be seen and Lily swam across a channel that was too deep for me to wade and got up into the grass along the dike. She dissappeared into the grass and came out. She then swam along the edge of the channel and spun back around to the grassy area she initially worked and got back in there. She was likely up and over the dike and in there for a couple of minutes when I hear here making a funny grunting noise and see the grass moving as she is coming back. She breaks cover by the waters edge and I see the lively black duck in her mouth and a glint silver on the leg - yep - sporting a duck band! SWEET! I think that I was even more stoked than Rich was! The kids first duck ever is a banded black duck...which we likely would have lost without my Lily dawg! It was the only bird that Rich got that day but he was on cloud 9! He will never forget this hunt or his first bird!

Tom Flaherty of Flaherty Game Calls and Ducks, Dogs and Decoys tagged along and took some pics.

NICE!!! Ill have to show Blake, he will always remember his first duck was a banded duck as well... Very interesting to get the info back on it once you send it in! Let us know the history on it too!

Very cool, Congrats to Rich!

Persistence sure does pay off, hope you get some good karma for finding that for him this season!

Shermie,

Tom uses a Canon body with one big ole' lens. When he starts snapping pictures it sounds like a motion picture camera! I don't know the specifics. Here is his blog Check out his images of a life and death battle of a preregrine falcon vs. a bufflehead that was captured at Irondequoit Bay - the buffy got away

Thank you lady and gentlemen! I will let Rich know!

Here are few more pics by Tom Flaherty that day

[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]A banded black duck for a first duck? That ROCKS! Nice job Rich and Nick.

Yep, I'll ditto that! Sounded like some nice dog work there, Nick. Dog work is half the pleasure of hunting ducks. I usually hunt alone yet I'm not really alone because my dog is my constant companion.

Congrats to Rich and to you for seeing a youngster get their first bird... or in this case... trophy! It's a charmed life when you get your first bird and it has a band. Way to go Nick.
