First hunt of the season (pics added)

I was able to spend the afternoon with my oldest Kyle doing some early goose hunting. The kids is more excited than I am to hit the water. He was anxious to try out his new waders even though I told him that he'd be hot. "Dad, I'm not worried about it. I just want to wear them" Okey dokey............

Kyle on the lookout for incoming flocks.

After awhile Kyle wanted to move to. I had to say out loud "Okay we are picking up the decoys now" It's an old Jersey trick because everytime I go and start picking up my decoys a bird comes in. So, the trick is to announce out loud that you are picking up the decoys and then wait five minutes and low and behold here comes a flock of 8 or 9 birds. I saw them go down on the far side but could not locate them. So I waited and gave a few quacks. Then, I heard them but couldn't see them until the last minute. They came right over my head and I didn't have a shot but I knew that they landed on the other side of the little island that we were next too. By now, Kyle was getting impatient. The kid scurries around more in a blind than a pack of mice in a cheese factory. I knew that they were going to come from my right and asked Kyle to give it a few minutes. Then...I heard them again and they came from my right as expected and there is one happy little boy when I connected.

Kyle was very fascinated with the size and started checking out the goose. When we got home, he had me cut the goose all up to show him the lungs, heart and all that good stuff. He has always been interested in the body parts and how they work. Maybe he will be a future pathologist or biologist some day.

Mike,
That was a very enjoyable story you wrote. I sure have to agree with you about announcing that it is time to pick up decoys and that is when the action begins. Really liked the pictures you took and what you had to say about Kyle. Glad you dissected the goose to show him the body parts. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I'll look forward to seeing more pics. Congrats on the goose.

Mike,
thats what its all about, passing it on to our kids. I can't wait for my son to be able to hunt with us and not just be a spectator. Good Job.
Where did you bag these?

Wow....thanks for all the positive comments. I just wish that I took them with a real camera instead of a phone. The first pic was with much better light which explains the better quality over the others. I really enjoy these times with my kids and my bond with them is incredible. We are going to have some great times ahead.

I try to take Kyle every chance I get. My daughter who is a year younger frequents often as well. My youngest it only two, so he'll have to wait till next season to start romping throught the woods. I started taking Kyle when he was three for quail and pheasants. We would just take short walks throught the woods. Then we started duck hunting the back water. 90% of the water isn't over my knee so it's a great place to bring the kids. This year hopefully some days out on the bay when it's not snotty weather. Kyle has been out in Gene Jr's TDB with his son Luke and that was fun for everybody.

The boat is Marsh Rat. I paddle it with kayak double blade paddle. Boat is awesome. 9' 3" long and the cockpit opening has to be around 7 feet. Plenty of room for us and gear. The profile is so low that it makes a great layout boat. It has high combing on the deck to help keep water out. Bought a seat from Ira that worked great. Really nice boats.

I don't think that announcing you're going to pick up the decoys is solely a Jersey trick :) isn't it freaky how that happens???

Good stuff :)

It's happened too many times for it to be a coincidence. Countless birds lost while deciding to pick up the decoys when we should have waited 5 more minutes, but this announcement trick works like a charm.

I am happy to dispatch of these geese. My kids can't got to the park b/c there are goose droppings all over the place.
