First NJ gobbler of 2011

I thought I'd share the adventure of this mornings hunt. Our season started yesterday and the weather has been unusually warm, but clear. The day started off with me entering the woods to a litany of gobbling. One of those rare days when you aren't sure which bird to target. I decided to set up near where I had seen the bruiser Tom earlier in the year and got to within 60 yards of the roost tree.

There was a large congregation of gobblers on and adjacent property and everytime those 3 would gobble the bird nearest to me would hammer right back. This went on for 45 minutes! As it neared time for flydown I gave a few soft tree yelps and one cluck, the gobbler answered back before the last cluck was done. At this point I am thinking it is a done deal. I jinxed myself for even thinking it! The gobbler flys down and hits the ground at 50 yards, but instead of heading my way he is mad and going to lay into the other gobblers on the adjacent property. I can only watch him dissapear down the logging road and out of sight.

I decide to move and hunt a field about a quarter mile away that usually has good action in early morning. I sat on this field watching some hens until the owner came by walking his dogs. We chatted for awile and he told me he had been seeing a big tom in this spot, but that he has not shown up for the past few days ( because he's down the road at the spot I just left ! LOL!) I decided nothing was hapenning here, so I headed for home.

Just for the heck of it I detoured back to my original set up, albeit 3 hours later. I let out some loud yelps and cuts and about 4 gobblers answered back far away. I set up the decoy and decided to sit for awhile and at least listen to the sweet gobbler music even if I didn't kill one. Every 10 minutes or so I'd yelp, they would gobble, and that was it.Never moved and never advanced in my direction. So just before I was going to head home I set up with a box call in hand and diapragm in my mouth. I wanted to make as much hen noise to try and convince them my party was better! LOL!............It seemed to do the trick, the next bunch of Gobbles were noticeable closer and they were moving my way!

At this point I cut the calling way back and wanted to make them work to find me. I purred and softly clucked. 10 minutes later I could hear the leaves crunching. The I saw two big Blue + White heads coming through the undergrowth at 30 yards. When one head gave me a shot I took it. The load of #4 copper plated lead rolled the gobbler while the other continued to gobble in my face! It was an enjoyable hunt and a fun way to bag the first bird of 2011. The gobbler was 21 pounds, 1 1/8" spurs" 11" beard.

congrats thats a really fine looking bird. Great looking decoy. they sure do get your heart a pumping when they are answering back and heading your way dont they?

Great bird congrats still waiting on my first gobbler i suppose it would help if i actually got out to the woods though ha ha

Good job Jode! I've often heard "Roosted does not equal Roasted!!" Glad it worked out. I never have enough patience and end up bumping birds, especially when they are not talking much. Always enjoy your stories.

Nice bird Jode and a great story. I'm still looking to fill my tag but I think you have a leg up on me with the decoy you are using. Congrats!

Thanks Guys, it was pretty exciting and goes to show being patient works.

Doug, Thanks. I'll see you Friday for the going away bash. Looking forward to it.

Brian "Roosted doesn't equal roasted " is very true!
I'm going to have to remember that.

Rich,
I'm sure you'll do good, you just to need to get Kyle working on a big turkey shorebird! LOL!

Congrats Jodie! Does my heart good to see you keep that turkey fever going!
Now if you can only get Sean to catch it...
LOL! I told you it was addictive!
Now, I just need to get you to make me one of those fine looking boxcalls - something with a tone to affect those Ozark turkeys!

Thanks Mike,
It's very addictive, almost as bad as carving (and you know how that played out! LOL! )

I've been trying to get Sean into it but no dice so far.

It's been fun messing with the calls. The one I used today is real clear toned and loud, but have made some super raspy ones for other guys to try out. Alot of trial and error to get them sounding good.

Great story Jode. Congrats on a fine bird. Even better when you're making your own calls and turkey decoys! Hats Off!!!

Hello Jode
I have been waiting for this post. I was sure that you would raise your head any day now. Fantastic bird. Wow 11" beard. I always like reading your stories, and rally like the calls and decoys. Some day? I was after turkeys also this morning. Left home at 3:45am and drove to my spot. Set up five decoys on the edge of a field and as daylight broke, my decoys had 1/2 inches of snow on them. It was coming down so hard I decided that going to work would be a better option. That usually doesn't happen. Incredible story and thanks for posting. I will be waiting for post no. 2.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Tod, I am sure you'll be on a gobbler in short order. It seems you always score a nice Tom.

Gary, Wow, snow, that's incredible. But if I remember right your hunting at elevation too. My best vista is 30 yards of mountain laurel and oak down an old logging road! NJ flatland can't compare to you mountains views!

I am thinking this gobbler is the same one I had seen during deer season. long beard but not super thick.

Nice. Fooling Birds with Calls, and Decoys til they're close, and then killing em is a great thrill. Satisfying, and good for the Ego. I enjoy the Stories almost as much as doing it myself.

Great story and photos Jode, made even sweeter when you called it in with a call you made to your own carved decoy. I'm really enjoying everyone's stories about turkey hunts, something I've never had a chance to try (but will one day I think!). Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all, it is very satisfying.

I am out until next week. In NJ were get 4 weeks (have to buy a special permit for each week) but you can kill one bird per permit. We have alot of birds and not as many Turkey hunters as other states.

Going to try and help a friend kill his first tommorow................
