First NJ gobbler of 2011

Got your text today. Didn't know that bad boy was sporting and 11 inch beard. Wow!
I missed the deadline to get the permit in and would have to buy whatever was left over the counter. I am going to PA in three weeks to hunt turkeys but I am I having serious turkey withdrawal. Can't find time to take off.

congrats Jode I knew you must have been stoked when I saw the email at lunch.

I think I have caught the bug as well bagging my 1st Tom going out all week to see if my brother can connect

Been keeping busy this offseason making decoys but I think I could get use to this as well, harvested my first ever gobbler this AM opening day of the NJ Turkey season. I have turkey hunted a few times before but never seemed to get into it before. With a private piece of property that we have acquired rights to hunt over the past few season I had seen a decent amount of turkey sign and decided this would be the year to really give it a shot. Had 5 gobblers this AM within 30 yards this morning coersed this guy from across a pond to within 15 yards, my turkey season was over by 6:30am, going out with my brother in the morning see if we can get him his 1st Tom

Good job on the bird! Sounds like a nice morning. I'm hoping to have a nice morning with lots of gobbling in the air for our opener on Sunday. Lately all we've had is rain (and snow and hail and thunder). I really like your call and decoy.

Nice going Larry, Thanks John.

I took my young neighbor out this morning and we had a great hunt. Birds were vocal and had a hen calling in our lap at 15 yards. She pulled in two gobblers also. My neighbor killed one of them at 20 yards. Was a bit sketchy wondering if the hen was going to bust us, but it all worked out. It was his first Turkey ever and he is hooked now!

Jode, nice hunt and story. They are a ton of fun to hunt. I took Hank (Skeeter) out on Sat for the youth day and he shot a nice longbeard. Then Tuesday I took a kid on our shooting team out for his first bird and he and I shot a pair of birds. This Sat, Skeeter (12 years old) is offered to guide Jamus Driscoll's two young boys on their first turkey hunt in NH. He has even offered to have them use his turkey gun so they can get their first bird. I'm so proud of him willing to help other kids get their first bird. I can't wait to go out with the boys on Sat it should be a blast. Good luck when you get your next permit. Hank

Hank, That is so excellent. Seems you've raised your son right! It is great he is willing to give and share some of his knowledge and success.

We had two birds come in today and could of pulled a double if we had a second shooter. I think I had as much (if not more fun) calling in a bird for my friend.

Here's him below with his prize...........

Nice bird and good for you to have so much fun bringing in a bird for him. Thanks, Your right, we are so lucky with Little Hank. I'm very proud of him and we are so blessed to have such a nice young man.

Well, you guys are getting me and my young friend Sam all fired up. My season opens on Monday, and I am taking Sam out for our youth-only hunt on Saturday.

I went out this morning and checked in with a few landowners to make sure they still don't mind me hunting their property. I was glad to hear that I was the first person to ask this year about hunting on my favorite spot, so Sam and I should have it to ourselves on Saturday. The landowner and I watched two big toms strutting across his back pasture while we chatted.

He's 86 this spring, and his only concern was that when I parked I didn't block access to his barn, because he and his son are going to be cutting timber from his woodlot Saturday, and he needs to get in to run his sawmill. I can only hope to still be that active in 40 years!

Jode I couldnt agree more I called in this nice bird for my brother this AM his 1st Gobbler, and I couldnt be any happier

20lbs
10" Beard

This bird was strutting with 2 Toms and 2 hens all over the field called them in to within 15 yards all 5 of them. Once he dropped the gobbler the 2 other gobblers jumped on him and attacked it was one of the Craziest things I have ever seen. Too bad we didnt have 2 other shooters as we could have had all 3. Gonna take my brothers wife out Friday hunting, and I can't wait
