Flapper board hinges?

For those of you who've made the flapper "doors" as a blind on your sneak boats, how did you hinge them effectively?


Looking for a few ideas before I start the project in a month or so...
 
piece of fire hose for the "hinge" screwed to board and coaming. Not pretty, but has a little wiggle room for the board to flop over and it doesn't need to line up perfectly.

On Bill Abbatte's South Bay Duckboat last fall, I replaced his fixed hinge pins with removable ones - so the boards could be stowed in the cockpit for off-season storage or over-the-road travel.

I made new pins out of 1/8-inch brass rod and put keepers on the pins so they would not get lost (overboard!). If building new, I would just get good solid brass door hinges with removable pins. (If you can still find them, I have some old pairs of galvanized with brass pins - and nice combination.) I would still bore a small hole through the head and tie a keeper on.

On my southbay restoration I used galvanized strap hinges and they lasted a long time. Yard sales turned up some nice brass hinges... They work well but need lube also...
I like the fire hose idea. I like the old school brass.

Here's another flapboard feature - I posted last fall from the South Shore Waterfowlers Association Duckboat Show. Ben Sohm uses different length dowels (broom handle sections) in these sockets to adjust the angle of his boards:

Thank you steve, exactly what I was looking for! Looks like I'll be busy again making changes this year, as usual!!




I gotta admit though, I much prefer hunting out of the Evalyn Grace until the ice is too thick for the big boat. Sneak boats are just too much fun - I can't wait to get my flapper boards on and let the shooting begin. Early goose is coming fast...
