Guys I am tired of flashlightss that do not work. Have any of you had good luck with any particular brand? I need durable and and waterproof.

Buy a stream light brand. They are pricey but the led models are as bright as some hand held spot lights. They are rechargeable, small, very bright, very dependable, durable, hold a long charge and can sit on a charger without burning out the battery. I use them at work and they are great. Go with the led model and if you can wait I will see what one I use and get back tomorrow night. You will not be disappointed. They are the same ones police departments use.
 
I love my Fenix light...this thing really lights up the night. It has a strobe setting and dimmer to conserve on battery juice.

I've resorted to $2 throw-away LEDs from the bargain rack at HD or Wally World.
They run on 3 AAA's, are bright as hell and if they last 2 seasons, I am satisfied.

MAG-LITE!

You can get them at Fleet Farm, accessories & parts are easily found, if needed, and they come in many configurations...... 2,3,4,5,6 cell.

I often wondered why they would make an odd numbered cell flashlight, when they only sell batteries in even numbered packs.

I have had a Powertac for over a year now use it pretty often have not been gentle with it, got a good work out during Sandy.
Price is right and very bright also waterproof.
 
For absolute brutal treatment, Underwater Kinetics are hard to beat. For regular sensible use, Maglite is my go to and still made in the USA. Streamlight pen lights are very handy, tough and bright too.
 
I know this one is an old post, but I am just catching up - I recommend Petzl for headlamps, and although I haven't needed a handheld light in years, I was a big fan of Maglite.

Underwater Kinetics lights are about as tough as your going to find. I have a few and they never fail me. My largest light, a UK800 it's probably over 20 years old and still functions perfect. Only problem is when I tighten the bezel a bit too much and dive deeper than 100'. The bezel gets pressure locked and I need a 4 foot pipe wrench to get it off. But as a surface light I doubt you will ever have that problem. I keep a few UK light on all my boats. I even use two of there pen lights on my underwater camera set up and a 4 "C" cell mounted to my slurp gun.

I literally trust my life to them when exploring inside ship wrecks and for rescue work.
They can't be beat, well actually they can be beat and will still work fine.
