Flat Jon vs. Mod V. Question

I have a question on why some choose a flat jon over mod v when using a mud motor. I have heard the argument that performance from the mud motor is lost when using a mod v, is there any truth to that? I was under the impression that the mod v was simply a more flexible boat in that it provided stability while at the same time handling some chop better than a flat bottom. So when using a mud motor is there any benefit from choosing a flat jon over a mod v? Thanks for the help

I run a 23 hp Go-Devil on a mod V 16' jon. It runs in mud just fine. It does take an extra inch or two to float the boat over sand than if it was completely flat.

The boat handles chop a little better but is still a wet ride in rough weather. The mud motor tends to push the bow down a bit when you throttle up. I bought the mod V because I got a really good deal on it and I am still happy after four seasons. I use it hard and I use it a lot.

I ran a 20 ho Godevil Longtail on a 1650 Express.... It worked just fine... I can't compair to a true flat.

I run a mud motor and a modified jon. I really notice the inneficiency with a heavier load.
A flat bottom is definitely better for mud/skinny water but there is a tradeoff there as well when it comes to chop.

I dont think there is a big difference between a mod-v and a flat bottom jon boat.
Where I do think there is a difference is between a smooth bottom mud boat and a jon boat.
The smooth bottom mud boat will glide much better over mud and have a softer chine, making them easier to get off the mud. Heck, under the right conditions, you can pole one sideways. try that in a ribbed jon boat
The ribs on a jon boat help you with keeping it straight and prevent skidding in turns, but is not as efficient when moving in 0-2" of water over mud.
