Florida guys. . . Visiting family over Christmas break near Tampa. Possible duck hunting opportunities?

So, my wife asked the big question. . . Can we spend Christmas vacation with her folks in Florida?

Her folks live in Weeki Watchee, FL. They are exploring the idea of staying on Sanibel Island. Are ther any duck hunting opportunities in either of these areas that I could explore for a day or two with my son while I am staying with the in-laws. My wife is very willing to compromise with my son and I hunting if it means we can spend time in FL with her folks.

So, can any of you offer help or advice to keep both mommy and daddy happy over Christmas? FL is on the bucket list of places to hunt with my son. we are willing to drive a few hours from eithe location to make a hunt possible.

Please feel free to PM if you are more comfortable with that.

Thanks in advance.

You talking Guide, DYI or looking for a ride?

A BIG NO on Hunting opportunities on Sannibel. The Weeki Watchee area maybe but I'm not familiar enough with that area to make a recommendation

I can recommend excellent Guides South of Sannibel, you'd be hunting managed marshes south of Naples most likely if you stay on the West side. East side is 4 hours east, little more little less depending on where you end up and staying and where you go. Hunting can be outstanding for stuff you'll never see in N.J. If you pick the right person.

Search Dani for pictures of Florida Duck Hunting East Coast side....

Contact me for more information if you want more

If you think you can make it over to Lake Okeechobee.... I would be glad to try to put you on some birds. Let me know if I can help. Jeff

Sure CAnderson, I'll take you if you can make it to Okeechobee. Take you out on Lake O. I'm not a guide but I'll hook you up.
I have some good friends in Newport NJ that I grew up with and hunted with. My wife is from Wall Township.

Chad,

Theres a place I wanted to hunt in Citrus County just north of where you'll be. I didn't make it before moving back north.

You might check into this area. Since I'll be back there someday I'd be interested in what you find.

Dani, Steve Sutton and John Hitchcock also hang out here: http://www.floridawaterfowler.com/cgi/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=FW+Message+Boards&number=1&DaysPrune=60&LastLogin=

and some of her friends hunt the coast. You might ask some questions here as well. You'll find her as Blueyed-goof.

There is also Weekiwackee WMA. I'm not sure about waterfowling. I think it's more in line with archery but you might check it out as well.

Also visit here. I was foruntate to hunt with some fine folks from the Tampa Bay area.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I would prefer getting together with someone from here. I am not opposed to a guide service but have really enjoyed the people from this site that I have met with face to face or corresponded with via phone and email.

My wife may be favoring the Weeki Wachee area if I am planning to hunt for a day or two.

Jeff-

Thanks for the offer! The drive to Okeechobee doesn't look bad from either location.

I am headed out of the town for a week and we still need to get some things figured out here to make the trip work. I will shoot you a PM when I am back in town and have a better handle on the plans.

John-

Thanks for the offer as well!!

As I mentioned above to Jeff, I will shoot you a PM when I get back into town and have a few things finalized with the trip. I would love to get together with you and Jeff, maybe for a day each if that can work out.

A Florida trip is on the achievable bucket list of hunting trips to do with my son before he is grown and out of the house.

Look forward to talking to you and Jeff when I get back.

Ed and Carl-

Thanks for the links. There is some great info to be found at those sites.

Keep you all posted as the plans unfold.
