Fly fishing for pike.

Had Juneau Carl and his two friends come to visit on the weekend to show me how to do this properly and with style. They ran me pretty hard, but it was fun.

I want a take back on what I said about being a fan of cheap fly rods. No way could I fish all day like them with my $30 rod, my wrist feels like I've been framing a house! Pike flies are like trying to cast a badminton birdie.

Here's some pictures. Maybe Carl will get on here and add some of his own.

Started off at a creek mouth with a weed bed in front.

That is the size I like for the frying pan, but we caught so many the rule was if you could let him go, he was released. We only killed ones that were hooked fatally.

First cast into a swampy back bay off a big lake. I think it was about 34"er.

Beautiful fish. What a great camo pattern.

Fish on!

A look at the kind of water we were trying to cover.

The one handed pike catch. Pretty fancy!

A was standing on the casting platform on my boat trying to get a cool shot.

Nice lazy fishing. The bugs are just about full force this time of year, so getting out on the water is the best way to avoid them. If you have to go to shore to pee, you will be attacked.

Carl was looking for a 40"er, and this one was close at 39". What a hawg of a pike though.

Jenny just swims and swims this time of year when the water is "warm". As she gets older, she tucks her hind legs up and goes front wheel drive more. Even The Buns spent some time in the water, but she's more of an edge runner.

Did "shore lunch" on the water to avoid the bugs.

Got Carl in the water locating fish for the boys to cast to.

The deck I had built for my bigger boat a few years ago. The original plan was to put a windshield on that thing, but its so handy as a platform I just haven't done it yet.

This is the platform I've had on my 14'er for years. It just sits across the forward seats so I can stash stuff under it, and works pretty good.

That's about it from me. Great trip!

Color me JEALOUS!

Love fly fishing, really the only fishing I've focused on for about the last 15 years. We get some pickerel in some of the east Texas lakes and I love going after them with big flashy flies in the winter when they're shallow. Always wanted to go fish for the REAL DEAL.

Thats awesome. I flyfish for pike every year...but will never have results like that. That post solidified a pike trip on my to-do list.

Also, I love that platform on the boat.

its good to see that Carl is doing well. I am guessing that by now he has graduated college at UAF. We have pike down here in South Central AK but they were illegally imported from up north and have helped destroy a couple salmon fisheries in the Susitna drainage. In this area if we take a pike out of the water we can't put it back unless we kill it. There are some streams where the food is all gone and there is nothing but hundreds of hammer handles eating each other.
