Follow up to the Prop Question: 18 HP on a 1548?

Any one out there running a welded 1542 or 1548 mv, like the G3s or Lowe boats?
Since the boy will most likely start shooting next season, I am leaning towards getting a little large hull before next year to gain some room. I really like the layout of the G3 1548s but not sure if my 18 hp will plane it with a full duckhunting load. Any opinions? Would going to a 4 blade on this rig be useful or still no real advantage?

I also like the layout of the Tracker Grizzly 1448. Almost as much room as the 1548s, it is wider & higher than my current rig (a 1440), lots of storage under the front deck and no center bench seat. It is a little heavier than my current rig (but not as heavy as the 1548s) and I think the 18 would push it just fine.

Carl, I had a 1750 MV Monark that would plane empty with a 9.9 Honda. My 25 Mariner pushed it at 27mph. It was a riveted hull but was pretty heavy.

Depends on the motor. I once had an old Evinrude 18 hp that would push my 16' polar craft (riveted hull) beter than 20 mph. I later got hold of a 25 hp Johnson that wouldn't push it nearly as fast. If you already have an 18 (I assume a Tohatsu or Nissan) I'd sure see if it would fit the bill rather than buy a new motor. If you go with a new motor for a heavy 16 0r 17' boat you could probably get by with a 25 or go whole hog and get a 40.
JMO,
Harry
