Yesterday while Bev was getting ready for the day, I took Serrano outside in our courtyard. Way back in September I saved a wing or two from the teal season for just this very occasion. Bev's little girl is 9 weeks old and I thought I would like to see how she reacted when I tossed a wing to her. I sure wasn't disappointed.
Habi has been my duck dog for 3 years now after Chili helped me train her. When we decided to let Chaco sire her litter, I thought we just might get some very "heady" puppies. That word referring to a pup being gifted with all the tools to make the retriever that we dream about. From what I am seeing in this young girl that Bev picked out of Habanero's litter at a very early age, I couldn't be happier.
Here are some pictures from yesterday morning when I introduced a duck wing to Serrano.

When this little tyke was just 5 weeks old, she ran and picked up one of her favorite toys that Bev had tossed. I remember sitting in the living room watching her perform as she brought it back to my wife. Bev gave me a look knowing full well what was going through my mind right then and there and said, "Don't even think of training her for a duck dog. You already have Habanero and Chipotle."

Once in a while you get a pup that exhibits all those traits of a retriever that will bring a smile to your face. It seems that Serrano has them from what I am observing so far. From what I can see, Bev, once again picked another darn good dog. She has a knack for it.

It was about here that I began thinking of what the possibilities might be when Serrano is old enough to have puppies in a couple of years. Right away I thought of Chip as the sire. Yes, those visions of sugarplums were there! I was already envisioning that first litter of pups that would be made up of blacks and yellows. That brought another smile to my face. In a split second I was brought back to reality when I heard Bev's voice from inside the living room. We had the window open because it was such a beautiful morning. "What are you doing to my dog, Al?" she asked. "Oh, we're just fooling around, honey," I said. She then came outside and watched us for a while. Bev had that look in her eyes. She, too, was impressed with what she saw in Serrano.
