This is the most important stopover in the northward migration for the half a million or so Lesser Sandhill Cranes as they stop to refuel in the ag fields and enjoy the safety of the vast alluvial alluvial flood plains of the Platte for nighttime roosts.....
Interestingly we have a migration stop over here in Washington for Greaters with the peak happening right now....if you've like "mass spectacles" of the wildlife kind this one should be on your bucket list.....

That's amazing! Someday I'll have to go see that. I can only imagine how loud the whole flock is in real life.

Had 35-40 in the decoys this morning, some where standing on the pit lids.
Knew they were there when I got out of the vehicle.
Little further east in Nebraska then usual but not uncommon, cool bird.

Steve, you are right, seeing the cranes on the Platte during migration is a must see. Hit it right and there are thousands of ducks and 100s of thousands of geese too.

Hit it right and you see millions of geese.
Steve if you are at the same # I just sent you a video.
If not the person had better appreciate the artistic value of a good snow goose tornado.

Michael....got it.....been a long time since I've been under a Snow Goose tornado so this was neat to watch.......thanks for sending it.....

Those are some big snipe.
I will sometimes see a couple hundred flying south in the fall. I can't imagine the noise that many cranes can make.

Snow goose tornadoes are way up on the awesome nature scale. From what I saw just flying over this spring they are in no risk of going away any time soon.

Quite a sight Steve. We hunted snows close to the Platte in early March. The cranes were just starting to filter in at that time. To keep them from being disturbed by hunting, you have to be a certain distance from the river. As the month rolls along the distance increases. It didn't take long for the snows to use the river as a safe travel zone. Thanks for the link.

Looks like the makins for a new scene in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". Imagine what would happen to you if a swarm of those spear-billed devils came down on you?
