Found a dead hawk this AM.

No marks on him anywhere. He was face down at the base of a clump of spruces. Hard to say how long he'd been there because our temps have been low enough to keep him fresh looking.

What kind of hawk is it?

If I were to guess Mike, I would say it is a "Broad-winged" Hawk based on its coloration.

Can anyone with avian expertise confirm?

Looks to me to be a female Northern Harrier (Marsh Hawk). I really hate that you guys up north can pick up dead ones without the feds being on you. :-)

I've been trying to figure this one out as well. It does appear to look similar to a broad winged hawk, however I don't think their range includes Alaska.
Where are you at in Alaska?
 
I think you are right Tim, Northern Harrier hawk. I looked at a bunch of pictures on that one and it seems to be a match. I'm going to give it to the Game Branch on Monday. SOmeone will stuff it for educational purposes I suspect.

HA, that's pretty rough on my part!! I've always enjoyed seeing your pictures and for some reason I had it in my mind you were in Alaska!!

Yep, a N. Harrier... did it get electrocuted or hit a window? It's feet are all curled up- looks like it had shock or something... That's a cool find for sure! =)
 
I have no idea what kilt it Chris. It was in the bush, no where near a power pole, no windows within a 1/2 mile... it was just dead. Taliban hit maybe? Maybe the fish cops can tell me tomorrow?

How are you posting the pics the size they are? I'm trying to upload deer pics but I have to make them less than 100 kb- isn't there a way around that? i forget...

Chris - I use Photoshop to resize my pics. You kilt a deer?

Joe - When we are done here Jane says we're moving someplace she can wear her shorts everyday, all year long, so Yukon Mike may be replaced by Figi Mike, or Togo Mike. But I'll still be the same guy. ; )

Think Hawaii.Maui or Molaki would be great to stay till May.Here I wear shorts April to November and no sox.Today was a little nippy 48 over night and could freeze tonight as the first coldest of the season.Means I might only need to cut grass one more time.LOL

Cool hawk there. I hit a Saw whet owl one morning heading duck hunting in MD. The sucker was about 5" tall and got lodged under my windshield wiper. I was running late, so I left it there until after the hunt.

I walked into the local store with it and everyone thought I was crazy to not get rid of it. They thought the fish cops would arrest me, thinking I'd shot it.

beer signs, owls.....I'm a damn criminal I tell ya.
