Not only did I not manage to drop my new iPhone in Lake Michigan, I actually figured out how to use it! After dodging around the rain sqaulls for three days and getting zero sleep on a bite that favored the near-full moon over daylight, the three of us called it quits with 14 chinook and three nice steelhead. I never put a fish over 19lbs in the fish box, but Keven G.. and his grandson caught four, with Grandpa' nudging the scale with one 26.7 over his apprentice's 25.3 lb. fish. I did get the honorable mention for netting all four of their fish... and landing a pair of 18.3 and 19.8lb chinook. Barque Pte. produced most of the large fish. All wild-origin fish with no AD clip.

VERY NICE HAUL even with just those four fish!

Sounds like a lot of fun to me
 
Well done...Although I have to ask, not that many years ago, the Michigan Fishing License had a "NO NOT EAT MORE THAN ONE MEAL OF SALMON OR TROUT IN YOUR LIFETIME OUT OF LAKE MICHIGAN" warning???
 
Dani, I should have pulled out the camera phone when the three of us were sitting in our raingear in a twenty foot center console. waiting-out the deluge that was falling on us in the Big Summer Island harbor-of-refuge!. ONE of us had an ear-to-ear grin nearly the entire time. Whoever said that youth is wasted on the young was mistaken. .Grandpa and I were kept busy stowing rods to prone on the deck, and discussing whether we could nudge the boat a little closer to the overhanging tree line on the hill by the old submerged crib landing when this was a summer commercial fishing colony site, to get some improved lightning strike protection!

Tom, one odd benefit of the Quagga sp. mussel invasion: the large four and five year-old chinook are leaner fish with improved edibility when compared to the Pacific salmon we used to catch in the 1970s. Fat content of alewife has fallen significantly, one issue in their population decline since they tap somatic energy content to produce gametes in early spring, prior spawning. Specific to body-burden contaminants content: Wisconsin toxicologists presented data from three sites in Lake Michigan two years ago at the Great Lakes Fishery Commission's Lake Michigan Committee, lake presentations sessions that documented the body-burden levels of PCB (which are fat and can be removed via skinning and removing the belly fat strip below the rib tips) has fallen significantly and sequentially from high levels in the late 1970s. Methyl-mercury is another issue, since it bioaccumulates in both fat and muscle tissue on a roughly equal basis in fish in the Great Lakes.. Per the Wisconsin data, methyl-mercury body burden content was equivalent for newly legal length lake trout (10 tp 18" fish) when compared to spawning age chinook. (3-5YO fish) . :Michigan crafts their fish consumption advisory to include dioxin-like PCB congeners as well, unlike Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana fish consumption guidance documents. Lake trout remain on the do not consume list...after fifty-plus years of Federal support, plantings, and protections targeted toward achieving a self-sustaining population.

I am not a big steelhead fan from an edibility perspective, but marinated in some dry white wine and Italian salad dressing for three hours and grilled they are quite good. As Carl mentioned, smoked over alder, apple, or cherry, salmon are excellent. Grilled with Cajun spice rub, they are good, too. Baked with Bernaise sauce, tarragon, and capers with cherry tomatoes, skinned fillets are excellent. We remove the high myoglobin, brown fat laden muscle, since it concentrates nasty stuff, too, via the high unoccupied hydrogen bond sites.in this burst activity muscle band.

Again nice fish; sadly, Puget Sound in WA no longer even compares to the salmon and steelhead fishing available in the Great Lakes.[frown]
 
Don't feel too bad, I sold my retirement gift- a Bistib Whaler Conquest 235- to a gentleman who lives on San Juan Island, in fall of 2014. Loved that boat! He and his wife put a crab pot lifter on it, and switched to the locally dominant Scotty downriggers, so I know the do still fish salmon, too. Out your way the net-penning fish culture industry would be my principal fear for the longterm future of the Pacific salmon fishery, particularly in this administration, where no environmental protections are deemed valuable for fish or game populations.



Capt. Geminski, we were inside the fish house at Peterson Brothers fishery. They allow sport boats to launch at their ramp and have access to the ice house-five dollars to fill a 70quart cooler. The melt-water is divereted via drain line to run continuously on the floor of the cleaning room with some tap water augmentation to washdown the floor and tables. Very nice to have good light, a screened wall on two sides and cold water.. We seldom have biting flies issues down on the Garden peninsula, but the mayfly hatches can be amazing, from Tricos up to Ephemera sp. and Hexagenia sp. that can blanket your boat each morning. This is Bill and Tina Artwich's boat from last year during the first part of the hatch-really shuts the walleye fishing down in the upper bays, too.

Tina's 28lb, 10 oz. chinook, also a wild-origin fish verified by the intact adipose fin. Most of the hatchery origin fish spawn at age 2-3 and grow faster, attaining larger weights than wild fish, but fewer proportionally live to AgeV.

When I worked for towboat we got ice from the local packing out house. We kept soft beverages, water and food in the cooler. Always kept a few rods and bait for the slow days. Also dropped smoked fish for the guys.
 
I have never physically seen the ice machine which is mounted above the ceiling panel in the ice room behind that cooler door, just the near-constant cascade of ice that accumulates in there. As I mentioned the use the 3" PVC line to drain the ice-melt, as well as employing it to wash off your boats prior entry to fill a cooler.


Usually, they will have smoked whitefish for sale on racks in the cooler room with a pay can on the wall. As tribal commercial fishers, they cannot sell smoked lake trout or lake trout fillets to the public; only through the Garden based fish wholesaler. There is a land line by the paybox for use in emergencies. Sport fishers often drop-off fruit wood half-cords for the smoker. Via prior order you can obtain dressed lake whitefish from them in quantity of choice. They have transferred motor parts, as well as complete motors purchased from SIM Yamaha- also a great group of folks to work with if you own a Yamaha or a Mercury Verado- when they make runs down to Washington Island for parts and supplies for their fleet of trapnet boats. They have a couple of open fields immediately inland that they use for gear storage and trapnet repairs that also are used as camper rental space for sport fishers who want to stay on-site.

I wish I could say the same for the Grand Traverse Odawa band that fishes via gillnets from their dock complex...
