Freezing up out here.

Got out this morning for a hunt. Had to break ice and the birds were few and far between. Although we saw hundreds of mallards, most were at a distance. We were not on the X. :) There are still a surprising number of pintails around and large flocks of GW teal. Only the larger lakes have open water with all the sloughs and ponds frozen over.

It was a gorgeous sunrise and the snow on the distant Rocky Mountains made for an awe inspiring view from the blind.

Paul~

Beautiful spaces! Having grown up along the coast, the hilly terrain here in dairy country makes me miss wide-open skies.

Do you move to rivers now?

All the best,

SJS

There are a couple of deep water lakes just to the east of where I was today and they will be the last to ice up. Just need to make sure I can get the boat in. Field hunting is not really my thing but it beats staying home.

Ice, what is that??
It was 82 and 100% humidity here before the rain started.

Beautiful pictures!

Please send some of that cold over the border and some of them ducks too!
It was 55 today in NE Montana !

We are in desperate need of weather, and birds here in Ohio. Aerial surveys are confirming my suspicions that the migration is late this year.

Snow geese started showing up in numbers the last few days in Rugby ND. But if ur nnot on the x forget it. Mallards are also showing in numbers. Lots of swans moving through and still shooting
green wing teal. Guess I'll miss the big push leaving for Florida next week.

Doug, it has warmed up here as well but the ponds are still frozen. This brisk north wind should push some your way. I probably saw more than 10,000 birds yesterday, all ready to heady your way.

The last photo captures my heart. I can only dream about seeing that around here.

Although my wife and I miss the family back east we certainly love our life out here. Prairies on one side of us and the Rockies on the other.

Does sound close to heaven.

I saw my first skim ice yesterday while hunting. I have to admit I was a little surprised we are only starting to flirt with freezing temps at night.
